Problems with TCP Rack and Pinion/U-Joints

Hi:

I am working through several problems/issues with the TCP manual rack and pinion system in my 65 289 (vibrations/u-joint wear). In the meantime, I am wondering if anyone has used one of those vibration dampening u-joints that Flaming River and others sell for use on rack and pinion units? TCP does not sell one, but should, and I am wondering what any users' experiences are with these types of u-joints.

I have no experience with this R&P yet, but planning on installing one so I have been studying up on them. I've read a couple different things which may or may not be applicable... first said was to not have cut the double D shafts too long or binding can occur, second is to drill/dimple where the set screws go or you can feel some notchi-ness in the steering. Like I said tho, absolutely no practicle experience with it so I could be way off base.

There's a lot of kick back in the system, and in the manual racks the greater strain on the u-joints causes them to develop some play. This is something both TCP and the manufacturer of the u-joints told me. Also, I get an odd shimmy of the wheel at about 65 to 80 or so (and I am trying EVERYTHING in the book to identify and rectify it), that has some relation to road surface. Frankly, if you are thinking of getting the system I would get the power rack, as it is easier on the u-joints and may mask some of the issues I have noticed. Frankly, I suspect others have had these problems, and I think TCP needs to do some additional work.
