ok, i have searched for the answers but am tired of scrolling through endless threads for an answer. so im hoping one of the experts on this site will help me.

ihave a 97 gt 5 speed, it already had modifications when i got it and im not sure what it had. but the car is very fast and appears to have been done right. but nonetheless id like to know what ive got so that i can do my own mods.

1. what is the easiest way to tell if the pi swap has been done already?

2. the car smokes a little only when warmed up and after it idles for a few minutes. is this valve guides or could it be something else? no smoke on cold or warm start up, only when it idles for a few minutes and then it only puffs a cloud and clears up.

3. has a low rpm miss, that i figure is a bad injector. only does it when you load the motor at lower rpms. once you pass 2500 it screams. how do i determine which one is bad? i am also considering upgrading the injectors but i dont know what the stock size is. what is the best upgrade for a mostly stock motor?

4. i know the car has aftermarket gears, at 55 mph in fifth gear i am turning 1800 rpms. my 98 gt 5 speed turns 1200 at 55 and is stock. and the speedo must have been recalibrated at some point because it is correct. does anyone know what ratio i have? or how do i figure it out?

thank you in advance for your answers.

96-98 Mustang's and 02-04 Mustang's had Romeo engines (oil fill on the driver's side)

99-01 Mustang's had Windsor engines (oil fill on the passenger side)

The best way to tell is first see if you have the PI intake manifold. If the first intake runner is on the driver's side you have the PI manifold. If the first intake runner is on the passenger side you have the NPI manifold.

PI manifold is on the left, NPI is on the right.

As far as the heads are concerned you need to find the stamping on them to tell for sure if you have PI heads or pull the intake manifold and look at the intake port shape on the heads. Square ports = PI heads, teardrop ports = NPI heads.

NPI on the left, PI on the right
