Megasquirt, who's got it?

So I'm thinking my h/c/i car will be getting an s trim in its future. As far as tuning goes, I have a moates quarterhorse I've been using. But I don't like dealing with 75 different fuel and spark tables. And I think the maf design is more of a hindrance than an advantage in a boosted application.

So I've considered selling off the moates chip and going to a megasquirt stand-alone setup. But I have a few quedtions. I see this setup here. MegaSquirt-II V3.57 plug and play for 1986-1993 5.0 Mustang DIYAutoTune.com
Does the MS come with the software? Are there enough advantages to the ms3 setup to warrant the upgrade? With this "plug and play kit", will all the sensors like iat, tps, iac, respond correctly? Without all the 100's of tables for altitude, temp, and heat, how is the driveability?

I have it and i like it alot, its pretty simple to use, and yes all the sensors work with it. Hooking the wideband to it is also one wire then telling the computer what wideband you are using. There is also a TON of support for it on the MS forums.

The software is downloaded online. You can run on a trial version of tunerstudio and mega logviewer for as long as you want. The software is only 70 bucks tho and it comes with VE analyze live, which is basically a program that makes changes to the tune while you drive. Ive heard its pretty good and i just bought the software and am planning to try it out.

If you needed another reason to get it, they are running a special for facebook fans for 17% off any purchase right now.

I have one fully assembled, never used DIY PNP w/ the 60 pin connector on it PM or call me if I can help.

yes you can, FWIW ive looked at software for this and big stuff 3, and the tuner studio is very similar the way it is controlled and the menus are navigated

hey man, hows your car coming along? looks like your happier without the turbo on it..

well have to meet up someday and you can check out my snowball :D maybe by the time your lookin for a blower,my si-trim will be going over to ysi..

I'm more and more interested in that kit, but I have a few questions:

Does it have a self diagnostic feature like the stock computer does?

Does it have adaptive strategy like the stock computer does?

It appears the MS II is a batch system, which, if I understand it right, means it just sprays fuel whenever, while the stock system is sequential, which means it only sprays while the intake valve is open. There is basically no difference in terms of power, but the batch system is not as ideal from an emissions and efficiency standpoint. I need to do more research, but I'm just not sure how I feel about a batch system for a street car.

It dosent just spray it whenever, batch fire is 4 injectors at once, sequential uses the firing order of the motor to fire the injectors one at a time. Are you sure the stock is sequential? I have a hard time believing that in 1987 SFI was used.

MS2, the plug and play kits are batch fired, otherwise known as bank to bank like the old FAST stuff. MS3 systems are sequential, but alot more work to set up than MS2. You can even run explorer coil packs with this stuff.

Im not sure what you mean by self diagnostic, but it does use an adaptive strategy and the computer can be set up to change parameters by itslef on the VE table with what AF ratios you set up for given RPMS and loads(you have to accept the changes first). It also will change the tune when IAT's get too high along with coolant temps.

By self diagnostic, I mean does the MS identify failures and return failure codes, like the stock computer does?

And I'm preeeeeeeeeeeeeetty sure the 86-up 5.0 was SEFI. I'll have to look through my books at home to verify that one, my google searching is coming up with nothing.

I dunno if it does that, but honestly i dont really care. All hooking to the diagnostic port on my car ever told me was that my EGR and smog pump were bad. I would think that if a sensor was not working it would be very easy to see by hooking the laptop to the box. You can monitor just about anything with the megasquirt. I was playing with tunerstudio last night and it has a window for checking if the IAC is functioning properly.

Hey I dont know much about all this tuning stuff, but from what I understood through they're website is that I could buy this kit and a MAF and convert my car from speed density? Because this replaces the ECU entirely?

Ms is SD. You don't need a maf. I've have a few problems with the MS that nobody from their company could help me with, besides telling me more things that I had to buy from them. Eventually I figured it out for myself 99.9% of the issues I was having. Though it took me about 2 monthes straight after work. Is it simple to use? Yes. Do I really think the support is there? No. Its hard because not enough people are using it yet to get info from others. I personally only know one other person using it, 90lx. Which can make it hard at times. My suggestion to you is go to your local tuner with it all set up, and have him look over everything and explain the tables and settings. Mike dez did that for me now I don't really believe I will have to go back to a tuner again.

Well, the car runs. But not right. I've been driving it a little bit. I don't miss the problems, but I miss the power of the turbo. Lol.
I'd like to check out your car. You updated your build thread lately? You might as well buy the Ysi right now, and make me a deal on that si. :nice:

I'm sure I missed the thread, but what happened to your On3 setup Lance? Most turbo cars see 11 months a year on jackstands and one painful month a year on pavement.

That's about what it was, my problems weren't in the turbo system itself, but my ultra-budget engine refresh I did the year before came back to haunt me (head gaskets)
So after letting one loose on the second set, I sold the kit and bought a trickflow top end setup.

So its a tuneable version of speed density? Instead of using a MAF you put presets to accomadate modifications? Sorry I'm just trying to clarify.

Yeah, kind of. The speed density has advantages in a forced induction, because you can reference back to boost levels and adjust your fuel tables to achieve the desired a/f ratio.
Some people can tune a maf based setup no problem. It's not a real problem n/a because you aren't adjusting for such an extreme power difference.

I'll make you a killer deal on a quarterhorse, the software and the laptop to tune it on. :D

It uses a MAP sensor built into the controller to tune. The MAF is just an extra restriction on the intake pipe.

You just run a vacuum line from the intake to the MS box and the MS box uses engine vacuum to gauge the load on the motor

nah i haven't updated it.. been doing more and more crap i dont need. im broke now, just waiting for rick to finish it and then ill enjoy it for awhile.

ill update it later if i remember to.
