I'm rebuilding the c4 transmission in my 68 mustang and have three questions:

1) My endplay is slightly out of tolerance - .046 vs .042 max - so I need a new #2 thrust washer and/or shim. According to my shop manual, Ford used to make a .090 thrust washer (the one now installed is .076) Any ideas on where to get one? I've surfed the web for hours and can't find one. Nor can I find a shim. Any ideas/sources?

2) The front pump bushing is installed backwards (I think). The notch and groove are supposed to face the pump gears; i.e., towards the "inside" of the pump, right?

3) Any shadetree techniques for installing a new bushing without buying an expensive bushing removal/install kit? I believe the bushing OD is 2 1/16". Maybe just take it down to the local transmissoin shop is my best bet.

You’re already into the transmission. I have learned by my mistakes that it is best to have all the (possible) replacement parts on hand before the teardown. If not, at least put everything back in the case (in order) at the end of the day.
As much as I hate to admit-it Harbor Freight has a decent cheap bearing / bushing, slide hammer type puller.
Makco Distributing.com Rowlett TX is good for parts and rebuild kits, tech support 972-463-6175 is very good.:nice:

Look in the local phone book or google automatic transmission parts. Most big cities have a trans parts store. The thrust should cost around $2.

it has been a while since I did a pump bushing and don't have my book here. Some people use a C6 bushing in a C4. Same diameter, but wider.

The thrust washer has a tab on it that fits neatly into a groove on the pump.

This site is great, they have everything, ship fast and are reasonably priced.

As for bushing replacement, you can take all of your parts and bushings to the local transmission shop and they'll replace them for a modest cash payment usually.
