had a little time today to look at the gt40 heads i got from a 96 explorer.the explorer had no smog crossover tube that connects at the rear of the heads.read somewhere that they would have to be machined to accept the tube.the hole on the head where the air should enter(or exit?) there is a hollow threaded plug.i could not get it out with any of the tools i have.so i put some jb weld on a bolt that fit the internal thread of the plug, tightened it down with my impact gun and let it dry.after awhile hit it with the gun and zipped the plug right out.the gt40 head is already machined and tapped for the bolts that attach the tube to the heads.i was worried that i would not pass CA smog, which is very tough.problem solved and i am relived.

I think he is just calling those plugs "freeze plugs" in error. I think just bolting on the crossover will pass visual but the fresh air won't make it to the heads so your emissions will be higher. One more reason I LOVE living in FL!

Do you still have the stock 4 cats on there? You could just cut the inserts off the thermactor pipe and bolt it onto the back of the head with it just blocked it off. I seriously doubt it will make any difference as to how well the car does in emissions.

I seriously doubt you will fail the sniffer. I ace the sniffer with no smog pump at all. The smog pump just gets the cats up to temp quicker, once they are there it makes very little difference. That is why most modern cars have an electric smog pump, it just shuts off once the car is hot.
