New hood on a 2006 GT, now engine is running lean

Hello, all! I'm new here, and I have a bit of a problem that I hope you can help me with.

I just got the TruFiber GTS-4 hood- it has functional ram scoops that dump over the CAI. Now when I go above 40mph and then let off the gas, my car stalls out. It's obvious what the problem is- there's too much air in the engine and so it's running lean. I need suggestions to fix this!

I have a few ideas as to how I can fix it, but can you please let me know if they're along the right lines or if they're completely wrong? As of now, I have cardboard blocking the duct. It worked to get me home so my engine wasn't stalling every few moments, but I don't want to keep it that way if at all possible.

  • New tune that calls for more fuel - But will I run rich when I'm off the throttle?
  • Get a K&N Air filter and put it in the duct to restrict air flow into the CAI...
  • Cover the CAI - I have a Steeda CAI
  • Get a Throttle Body to control the air intake (will this stop too much air from getting in the engine when I let off the gas though??)

Those were all the ideas - I'm really hoping that a Throttle body will help, but I honestly have no idea. :/ Has anyone ever experienced this (or something similar) and knows how I can fix it?

The only way to solve this properly is a new tune but you must advise the tuner of your issue with the ram air. I don't think its too much air as it is to turbulent and thowing off the MAF.


I contacted BAMA earlier today. They said that they could send a tune for increased air flow, but they also said that it wasn't consistent and they wouldn't suggest it. The guy I spoke to went on, saying that they couldn't send a tune that would account for the chaotic nature of the turbulence that the MAF sensor is experiencing. They could send a tune that turns the MAF sensor off... but then the car would run like crap and then die painfully.

I had a couple of people suggest deflecting air so it doesn't hit the CAI directly. How could I go about doing that?

Your best bet would be to get very thin, tin-stock aluminum and bolt it to the heatshield on the intake, so the air rushing in the hood is deflected away from the filter. Basically, build up the headshield so that the hood seals with it and any air rushing in is deflected away from the filter, eliminating the possibility of flooding the intake/MAF with such a significant amount of fresh air.

At first I thought "That's crazy", but then I looked at the picture of the under side of the hood. That seems to be a true ram-air ducted right into your CAI. The only thing I could suggest is what has already been mentioned, a shield/diverter or more mesh in the hood, but that kinda defeats the purpose. Have you contacted trufiber? It seems they sold you a hood that made your car run like crap.... They should have some answers.
BTW, It's a great looking hood.
 
You'd think with the cooler air coming in it would run better. Computer and oxygen sensors work to some degree to adjust fuel. A tune adjustment is likely required as it shouldn't be that finicky just for more cooler air.
 
Its not the volume or temp of the air that is the problem - it is the turbulence. Aim a car dryer or leaf blower at the CAI with the car running. It will cause the same problem. The MAF needs a steady smooth supply of air to read correctly. Thats why a tune can't really compensate.
