I have a 1995 cobra svt with a 351w Ford racing block bored .30 over with too many mods and add ons to list. The problem all started a week ago the car hadn't been ran in 40 days (ran perfect before this) i went to start it the batterie was dead. I jumped it out and drove to the gas station i had it stiilng their at idle and it all of a sudden started over heating radiator fluid started spraying every wear. I towed it back flushed the cooling system put a new thermostat in and it was running perfect stayed at a good temp then all of a sudden it started over heating again spraying a lot of fluid out. What eles could this be? blown head gasket? bad water pump? it needs a new belt tensioner could that be it? any help welcome....

when I popped a head gasket my car would idle all day, but if you drove it at all it would overheat.

Do you have a electric water pump?

Fan relay working?

Do you have a fan thermostat?

Sounds like a blown head gasket, or a major problem with the water pump. Explosive overheating can only be a lot of combustion gas, or no circulation at all.

Most places can test for exhaust gasses in the coolant. I wouldn't be too quick to assume a head gasket unless there were other indicators such as water in the oil or dense white smoke from the exhaust. I would just pull the T-stat and see if the overheating stops. New doesn't always mean good. A water pump failure is also a very possible.

The blown head gaskets I usually see don't get water in the oil or thick smoke out the exhaust. You can run a test to see if there are exhaust gasses in the coolant.

Another vote for the head gasket. My old V6 blew the head gaskets twice (Ford defect, had a recall on the head gaskets), and both let exhaust into the coolant. It acted just as you described, overheated quickly no matter what I did.
