Car skids, fishtails like crazy on wet pavement

I have a 2002 V6 and I just see myself getting into a major accident with it one of these days. If the ground is even slightly damp, the car skids and fishtails like crazy and is all over the place. I always try to take it easy when it's wet out and always drive carefully, don't speed, and I'm careful making turns but it still does it - and does it bad - no matter what I do. My tires are still decent but I was thinking maybe they're part of the problem? It's really hilly where I live too, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Earlier I was coming back from lunch and made a right turn very carefully and still, the car was all over the road and I swear it was on two wheels at one point. I seriously thought it was gonna flip. And I was driving very carefully, it's not like I was driving like a lunatic.

My brother has a '95 GT and said he and my sister in law have never experienced that problem. My neighbor who has an '04 V6 said it happens all of the time to her though.

rear are light, torque is high. so all you can do is drive appropriate for the weather and keep good tires with good tread depth on.

kinda expected with the mustang rwd vehicles.

JenM- Do you know how old the tires are? Even if they have "decent" tread left, if they're more than 5 years old or so they could be about shot due to age.

Also, can you tell us what kind of tires they are? That would help.

I'm not sure how old the tires are because I've only had the car since January. I did find a receipt for a battery in the glove box though and based on the date and mileage listed, I'm guessing the car sat for a while so it's possible that the tires are pretty old.

Tires are Nexen N5000s btw. I'll probably get a new set of tires within the next few weeks. What do you guys suggest?

It has to be the tires. And if you felt like the car was on two wheels at one time and you were afraid of flipping.....you were going too fast no question about it. Only problem I see would be the tread on the tires or maybe the suspension

Okay... where do you live and what kind of weather do you deal with? The first thing I'd suggest is definitely new tires. Lots of good options out there, let us know what you're going to be driving in. ;)

Thanks for all the help guys, looks like new tires it is. I'll probably get new ones next week.

Right now I live in North Florida in an area that's very hilly and is prone to flooding during even moderate rain (though we usually get torrential downpours). In six months I'll be moving further south so I won't have to deal with hills or flooding really but I'll still get quite a bit of rain.

Sorry it took me forever to reply, I couldn't post replies to this thread for the longest time.

And no RangerBoy, I'm not old. Unless you consider 23 old.

weel that just explains it all if your 23, you like speed and going around turns fast will make you feel like your tipping over, the ford mustang suspension was built to lean with the car to get around turns faster and easier, and yes it is your tires just get new ones and slow it down a little bit
