1968 289 H2O

Did you remember to spray a little bit of something slippery into the threads on your puller? Might not need it for that little guy, but if you really have to 'work' to pull something off, shoot some WD 40 or similar on the threads, it really makes the whole process easier....

Once you had the trans out you could have turned the crank..... but if I remember correctly, the block was seized too. You have all the pistons out now, you still couldn't turn the crank ?
Come to think of it I could turn the crank once I removed all the seized pistons while the engine was still int the car, so disregard that previous statement when I said how could I unbolt the torque converted from the pressure plate before pulling the engine. Maybe my tranny was in gear when I tried it, and then in neutral it worked, I don't know any more.

Why thank you, that's a good tip, yes sometimes when you are pulling stuff it's a major PIA so the less friction the better.

Timing Cover Removal

OK, first of all I am one of those people who can stare at things and not see anything or read about stuff and not learn anything, but you get me to do something hands on and it's embedded in my head for eternity [or at least 'till the next Bachelor party, LOL].

So calling this intricate piece a "Timing Cover" is like calling Michael Jordan a "Good Dribbler". By the way I count 13 bolts, or at least bolt holes, lol.

I mean this thing does a lot. It holds the dip stick (hey I didn't realize that until I almost poked my eye out when it all came off as one piece). It gives the fuel pump a place to attach to (and I could have sworn it bolted up to the block), it houses the hockey puck looking mechanism on the cam sprocket that actually operates the fuel pump and pumps the gasoline. It gives the water pump a place to attach to. Why wedge this aluminum piece with precious oily bits between the block and the water pump full of coolant (ie the enemy of all oily bits) I don't understand. And oh by the way it covers the "timing" components, ie crank and cam sprockets/gears and chain LOL. So I think it should be called "I do a bunch of things as well as cover the timing in my spare time" pun intended.

So without further ado... AND NOW, from the university of North Carolina at point guard, number mber er twenty twenty ty three hree ee MICHAEL JORDAN (or equivalent in this case)

Cam Gear Removal

I removed the fuel pump drive doughnut thing, so that I could remove the cam sprocket in order to get to the thrust plate.

All these steps make me think about those people to whom everything is easy. I hate them! You know the type that are across town when you call them and say, hey man the thing's about to start where are you? And they say I'll be there in 10 minutes, than they show up 45 minutes later.

The type that say, oh swapping the cam is easy it's like 2 hours and you can do it without removing the engine out of the car. Well, those guys either A. never replaced a cam in their lives - OR- 2. they have but it took them 2 days and they did a half @ss job and had a couple parts left over, can you think of anybody you know like that... [I'll wait] LOL

did you measure how much play was in the timing gear set, before you removed it by chance?
Umm one more time in English sir, are you asking if I checked how loose the chain was? I am not being smart, I honestly don't know what measuring play means. The chain seemed to give about half an inch, so seemed pretty good to me. Plus not sure how removing it and putting it back can change that, it's not like it stretches while off the gears, but what do I know. Teach me something, please.
 
Cam Out - Finally

OK, finally got the cam out, how long did that take, two hours? LOL

First thing I noticed is how heavy that thing is. I wanted to weigh it but I loaned my digital scale to some gremlins. I'm guessing it's about 12 pounds.

OK, so could someone take a look at the cam close up and tell me if those lobes look worn, they have darker spots on the corners, and I have no idea what that means if anything.

All that "measuring play" means, is how much slop, or wear, is indicated from being stretched, from use. For a timing gear set, 1/4 inch, left or right( for a total of 1/2) is fine. Anything more than a half says time to get a new one. Most folks don't think about how much a chain will stretch over the years, and don't realize how much a sloppy timing gear set can affect drive ability. And the cam does look used, but not ruined, in my opinion. Are you going to try and measure the lift, and reuse it? I have never been comfortable with used internals. Lots of other guys utilize used pistons, cam and lifters, etc..with no problems. I'd rather spend the money for new stuff on that kind of thing.
 
what's up guys, feels nice to be missed, well I took a little break from the stang and went back to working on my electric motorcycle conversion since technically I started that first and got tired of trippin over bike parts in the garage, ok, ok, so the wife gave me an ultimatum to get that ***** out of the garage so that she could park in it again

anyway the floors are next on the agenda for the '68 and there will be no post on it because everyone and their mother has already done a thread on floor boards, I will do a new post on overall progress soon I think
