Hey gang!

Seven years ago, you all helped me write a series of articles for a magazine that covered classic Mustang brake upgrades at that time. And, gave out credits to all that helped here.

Many editors and magazines since, it is time to update that story, as I am sure there is new and improved systems available now.

So, here's the parameters:

Can be Ford or Aftermarket
MUST be bolt-in, NO welding or custom machining
MUST be able to do with hand tools
MUST be compatible with available wheels, 17" max dia
Looking for front systems, including drums upgrades
All rear systems Must use either 8" or 9" axle, NO Fox swap.

So, what is on your pony, how do you like it, how was the installation, what options are there with your system? Post a pic or two also, and let's see what can be used.

As usual, many thanks in advance for your help and input.

As for my cobra, I'm still beating it to death! Now pretty much a race car. and, would you believe Deanna is a senior at Penn State? :jaw:

my best to all of you,

Dan

Been a while since I put up a pic of Cobrask8, here it is at VIR at a vintage meet!

That's a great source! I like the upgrade to modern calipers, gives you more options for pads. How has it been on your car? what's out back?

Anyone using the PBR Cobra Calipers or an aftermarket kit such as Baer or Wilwood?

I have drums in back still. I dont drive the car hard enough to ever have the rears fade and most of the braking comes from the front anyway.

It stopped really well with the CSRP Granada set up but there is much more stopping power with the SN95 set up. It has a different feel now, like a modern car.

Y'know, I'd be interested in seeing how to upgrade stock power front disk brake systems. Most of the the articles or kits that you see are either conversions from Drum or large-scale upgrades to 3-4 piston calipers with 17" wheels and up. What can be done with a stock PDB car using original wheels that would improve braking? Vacuum cans? Better linings, stainless steel pistons? I for one need to keep both feet on the brake pedal when I am at fast idle in order to bring down the car.

Just swapped out my KH's (..well whole front susp too) for Cobra PBR units. Originally had the street or track adapters and drum hubs to work with the stock susp.

Who's kit did you use? From the pic, I see a modern SN-95 hub with the separate rotors. What spindles are used? Wheel restrictions? Change in track width?

Many Thanks!

I have the csrp KH conversion in my 66 coupe, the strange explorer kit for the rear on my 9", with a mustang steve pedal and power booster, 2000 v6 mustang master cylinder, and a vacuum pump in the trunk. Only driven it a couple time now, seems to stop well (unless I forget to turn on the vacuum pump).

Its the AJE k member kit, comes with their spindles. SN95 hubs/rotors/calipers bolt right up. It maintains the same track width, but now with the UCA eliminated I have more wheel/tire freedom up front. Can actually bolt a 04 bullit wheel (5.72bs) w/o adapters and it just barely fits (looks awful all sunk in the fender though). Seeing that, I don't see any reason why I cant run a 9" wide wheel up front now.

Dan,I believe you might want to talk to ultrastang about using the '94-04 SVT Cobra brakes on the front. Steve left a teaser photo up on one of the previous "brake" threads with brackets for putting the PBR's on 1970-73 disc-brake spindles I'd guess that would work on the Granada spindles as well.
Had me all fired up about the idea (wouldn't have to hunt drum-brake spindles for my XR-7); but I didn't pull the trigger as it was still too far out for me to comit to a brake upgrade. Looking around, I'm thinking that I don't/won't need 13" discs as much as want them; and I haven't found the style of wheel that I like in a 17" witout paying $300+ EACH. 16's are easy (cheap), so I'm thinking the GT rotors would work out for me.

Jumping off-topic: Are you and Dee still on-track for a trip out here in 2 weeks? I'm still banging away at it, but Friday isn't looking too likely at present; more likely able to make it for a short while on Saturday depending on your schedule. And if Sue isn't "on-call"; might be all three of us (with Matt, if he's not working in the date groves over the weekend).

I'll check with UltraStang again, I used his stuff in the first article. This time, one of the requirements is that the kits I feature must be available for sale.

PM me your phone number, and we'll go over the weekend. Sat could work!
