painting rim thread?

Did a couple of searches and couldn't find it. A few years ago a user did a thread about painting his rims with the tires still mounted. I was wanting to paint mine and was going to use his method but can't find it, anyone else done this or have a better way?

Masking tape, brake clean, primer and engine enamyl and the paint will last a long time

Seems like i remember this dude using a heavy coat of tire shine to keep the paint off the tire, never thought of using index cards though.

Not sure if it would work, but I did this trick on some wiring I wanted to keep paint off.

Aluminum foil. Wrap it nice and tight around the wiring, and then when done, just take it off. Might work on the tires, might not? The playing cards isnt a bad idea either.

Get them powdercoated and you wont regret it. Painted wheels look like sh** 9 times out of 10. I got all the wheels done on my Lightning for $250 inside and out, cause they were painted when I bought it and looked terrible... just my two cents...

wheel paint is actually good stuff. They key is in the prep. hosing the wheels down and spraying them after they dry wont hack it. spend the time sanding and smoothing all the flaws off and you wont be disappointed. I actually bedlined the wheels on my jeep and they came out great. 6 months later and they are still holding up to the mud and beach sand.

Trust me, taping them takes for ever, use the index card trick. They slide right in between the rim and tire and you'll be painting in 5 minutes.

If your tires are still mounted, clean clean clean. Tape will stick but a trick I learned about twenty years ago was take vaseline and rub it on the tire where you do not want the paint to stick around the rim. be sure not to get the vaseline on the rim as it will fisheye the paint. The index cards work good still will need to tape them down to hold them.

Tire shine sounds like a recipe for fish eyes! But there is liquid masking that body shops use, just rinses off afterwards.

Did find a video of the guy using the index card method. seems to work well, I might go with that.

I painted my pony wheels with tires on them on my white 93 gt.

I used Blue painters tape and taped them up really well. I used the wheel paint from advanced auto.. It turned out really nice...

Nothing really hard or special about it.. Just taped them up I used 3m scotch bright pads and scuffed the wheels down. Cleaned them with brake clean and dried thoroughly then painted them using thin coats so it didnt run.

I used the blue tape and taped over the pony emblems on the center caps and tucked it into the crevices and cut around it with razor blade and painted them too... Just taped off the valve stem...

Those turned out nice.

Ive scrubbed my fronts (the worse of the bunch) and they are coming decently clean, the paint is thin in spots but will do for now.

Bead blaster FTW on painting wheels. If you don't have access to one, sand sand sand! use lotsa light spray solvent that will flash off to clean them. Armor all always seems to eff you at the drivethrough otherwise.

The cards sound like a good idead. I've used tape no sweat.
