What is it going to take to convert to Carb? I have a friend that is having a wiring nightmare, How easy it would be to just Carb his 89 Stang . I know he needs an Intake and Carb set up, But what about the wiring? What will have to be done?

it would be cheaper, faster to fix, and easier to fix the wiring harness and stay fuel injected

He's absolutely right. Don't butcher a perfectly good 5.0 Mustang just because you are electrically challenged...

For free automotive electrical training, see Automotive Training and Resource Site . I have personally reviewed the material and it is very good.

A word of warning on EFI to carb swaps: don’t expect to pass emissions in any state that does comprehensive smog inspections, because it won’t happen. Some states will not title or issue license plates to cars that have been converted from EFI to carb. Be aware that you are violating several Federal laws concerning the removal of pollution control equipment. If you operate the vehicle on public highways and get caught by state or federal law enforcement (doubtful, but possible) you could be subject to fines and imprisonment. You won't get any more power from a carb than you will from EFI.

Some of the motivation of my negative comments about carb to EFI has to do with the quality of electrical workmanship. A lot of the wiring “repairs” that I have seen on the road and in the junkyard looks like road kill. The other part of my negative view stems from people who can’t grasp the operation and tuning of EFI. Carbs have their own set of requirements and some learning is required to get the best performance. Every car is different and each installation needs to be tuned to get the best performance. Putting an “out of the box carb” or one from someone else’s car isn’t the way to success. There is no auto compensation for small variations in carbs like there is for EFI. Just throwing a carb on a car because you won’t bother to learn how EFI works is a poor excuse.

As for the wiring, I just pickedup a full body harness out of an 89 GT for 250 dollars, and I got the computer harness, 02 sensor harness, and injector harnessfor 75 shipped to my door.. so it would def be cheaper and a lot easier to just replace the wiring harness that is giving you troubles..

We have 3 harnesses and this weekend we are going to take the Ecu harness out of my Stang and build one out of the 3 we have ... or try to ... I have been trying to get this guy up and running , but there is no parts in this part of Idaho,,,

I was toying about going carb, but chose in the end not to. The way i figure it is, either way it will have to be professionally tuned. The tuning systems are expensive and I am not going to waste a good motor trying to do it without a dyno. I do wish there was an affordable, easy efi software to use.

We have 3 ECU harnesses and one of them the only difference is a green connector by the ECU mine has a grey one.. we are going to trace wires and see if we can make one this weekend.. We have another one with the grey connector but it is missing some other things..

i agree with going carb bc its simpler cheaper and easier to fix, but all you need is intake carb 85 mustang 5.0ho carb distributor, and a duraspark box, and low pressure fuel pump its very simple, just pull the ecu and complete harness out, i went carb and never go back, you can do whatever you want to without a tune or anything, also you will need to drop your tank and pull out the intank pump, if your near va pm me for exact details, my engine bay looks so much cleaner now, but thats just my two cents as well.
