Ok so I have the typical rust issue that is found on foxbodys. I called a local shop here to get an estimate on what it would cost to have it fixed. If they cut just the rust out and then weld a piece of sheet metal back...3000-4000. If they take from a donor car and replace entire thing ....5000-6000. Is that high or normal??:jaw:

As someone that works in a body shop, I can tell you that what they're trying to say is "We'd rather not work on it, so please go elsewhere".
Why don't they just say it, then? Why the high quote? The honest answer I would accept & would probably not write them off as a potential future customer. A quote like that, I would never go back & would tell everyone else not to go there either.
Very bad business practice; probably indicative of the work they do.

I've seen this before, I don't think it's bad business practice. Let's say I mow lawns and trim bushes for a living, and one of my customers asks me to trim his tree to look like an elephant. Well, I might have the tools to do it, but it's not exactly a regular part of my business routine and it might be something that I don't really care to spend a lot of time doing. So I say that I can do it, but I'm going to charge a premium for it.

For a shop that might specialize in swapping out broken headlights and respraying scratched bumpers, I can see how they might quote these kinds of repairs on an otherwise very low-worth car the way they did.

lol I was gonna say a roller?? You can buy a 5.0 in good shape for 4g's

Because if you really wanted the work done then that's what it would cost for them to do it. If you want to pay it I am sure they will be happy to do it for 4g's, if you are a normal person then you will walk out.

The reality is that 99% of body shops these days do one thing: production work. They make their money doing insurance work. Quick turnaround, high volume repairs. To get someone to do the kind of repair discussed here in a mainstream body shop will be almost impossible.

Quote sounds high to me but look at from their side (not defending just trying to ratioanlize) $100 bucks and hour labor, 30 or 40 hours maybe need to pull the engine to gain correct access. They will have to make sure its fixed right if it breaks while your driving then they have liability issues. Still agree with the bad business practice, instead of telling you how they would go about fixing it they just gave you a high price, probably didn't want the work maybe they are not that good at that kind of repair and figure they will make more money changing head lights and painting bumpers. If that's so they should have just been honest with you and saved all the bad thoughts we now have about them.

No way that job is 30-40 hours... absolutely no way.
