Intake question

for a 94 gt, i want to replace the intakes on it i've been reading regards the gt-40 intake, the trick flow intake, and then i found one on ebay typhoon. I was wondering which kit will give me more for my dollar. also what gains have you guys seen in the different ones.

thanks for any help clearing this up some

Depends on what heads you are running. The GT-40 will give you all you need if you are still running stock heads. The Trick Flow will be a little on the big side, depending on which intake it is. The Typhoon is a Chinese knock off. You can get a Cobra intake, a GT-40 or a Ford Explorer intake, they are all essentially the same thing. You should be able to get one of these for about $200 used.

so the cobra upper and lower will add a little hp? over the stock. im still 100% besides the headers back. i dont know 5.0s but i ordered the 5.0 performance builder book from amazon. I'm like newbee with the 5.0's.

what kinda improvements should i expect from the intake change if i add the CAI also....anything around 100 dollars can i do to improve ? thanks for the help boss

our stock lower intake is the single most restrictive part. replacing that alone can add up to 35 horses
The Typhoon is a Chinese knock off.
yep. it still flows better than our stock intakes

but i agree with kurt ... they are not a good investment in the long run, unless you want to put more time (or money) into porting them, but that negates the positive aspect of it (the price).

Yeah, I'd just rather get a quality part used than a Chinese one new. There are so many intakes on ebay and forum classifieds right now, you can pretty much get anything you want in whatever condition you want it.

The Explorer and Cobra (GT40) intakes are essentially the same casting on the inside, just look a bit different on the outside. They do flow the same though. Now a tubular GT40 intake flows the same but is made with individual pieces welded together instead of cast, but usually have a heafty price tag.

The uppers flow more than the lowers and you can get the lower ported later when/if you get different heads.

For your setup the best bang for the buck would be to find an Explorer GT40 intake. You can usually find the set (upper and lower) for about $125-150 plus you will need an adapter elbow which are about $60-90 new.

A '94-'95 Cobra intake will bolt right on with no need for adapters or anything.

sweet thanks guys think ill find a set of upper and lower and once i get home ill be spending at least a day in the drive way doing these. question if i wanted to paint the intakes any ideas on how to do this with out screwing it up or looking nasty since i will be buying used.

I bought a used 95 cobra intake off ebay. Apparently the guy painted it red then cleaned it up. i received it pink lol. but anyway i sanded the entire upper smooth and painted it with high temp engine paint and high temp clear coat. turned out pretty nice. Its a little time consuming tho but worth it.

i sanded it by hand and used the coating on it like a filler to smooth the entire intake. started with a 100 grit and ended up with a 1000 grit sand paper. like i said it was time consuming. looking back i prolly should have just polished it lol, but the black looks awesome being the same color as my car.

P.S. explorer intake bolts right on without a spacer with stock valve covers obviously

Last5.0 questions for ya..

1. WTH is bead blasting..is it like sand blasting? and what type of places do this type?

2. i forgot to ask regards the explorer gt40 intakes, do i need a spacer or anything or do they bolt right one no issues?

thanks

It's essentially the same as sand blasting only with a more refined media.

That being said, I hate media blasting. It gets you absolutely filthy. It's even worse when your best friend calls you in the middle of it and says he needs help, because he just locked his infant in the car in the middle of the Georgia summer.
