Misses around 4,000 rpm when WOT and bogs down/stops pulling

My 95 GT 5.0 was missing around 2,000 rpm and running horribly. It only has some minor bolt ons. I took it to my mechanic and he rebuilt the distributor. He said it needed a stator assembly. He set the timing back to the factory 10 degrees. Car now runs fine under normal driving, but at WOT it pulls until 4,000 rpm and then misses and stops pulling. I spoke with my mechanic and he is saying to try a new distributor, but I just paid over $300 with parts/labor having him rebuild my current one. Any suggestions before dropping more money on a new distributor? I have already changed the plugs, wire, cap, rotor and cleaned the MAF before taking it to the mechanic. Could changing the timing back to the 12-14 where it before the distributor rebuild possibly fix it?

I'll be willing to bet he used a crappy parts house pip sensor/stator when he rebuilt it! Before you waste anymore money with your mechanic, buy this right here: Buy Richporter Distributor FD22 at Advance Auto Parts

For some odd reason most of the PIP sensors for these cars that have been made in the past few years are junk. I've had my share of horrible experiences with them myself and I can tell you there are only two options: get the distributor I listed above or go to Ford and buy a new PIP sensor from them.

Thanks. He usually uses NAPA for all of his parts, but I'm not sure if that is where he got the stator or not. I'll look into the distributor you mentioned. I found one from Cardone through Autozone, but they seem to have mixed reviews.

I had good luck with the Cardone's I sold. Certainly not a 0% defect rate or anything, but as good as anything else. That Richporter actually looks like a really good deal though. I've had a Cardone in my Mustang for 6 years now.

The key there Kurt is "6 years" which seams to be well before the f-ups they are selling now. For wall we know they could have a production run in the hundreds of thousands of PIP sensors and they all share the exact same defect. Think about it, MSD, Cardone and Summit all have the same problem and I'll bet they are installing PIP sensors that are from the same exact manufacturer! I don't know which sensors Richporter uses, but I've seen and had good luck with them.

Thanks for the information. I had my mechanic check/reset the timing last night and still had issues. He did have the spout out when setting it. I ordered the Richporter Distributor through Advance before seeing the post about stockwise.com. It was more expensive through advance, but they are close to my house so if there are problems it will be an easier return. Hopefully this fixes me up and gets the car running well again. Thanks again for all of the assistance. I appreciate it.

Yeah, I guess that could be the case. Different brands definately get a bad run on things. Thanks for posting that Richporter though. I was totally unaware of that brand.

Same here until a guy at Advance found it for me a couple years back. It was 10$ cheaper than the Cardone unit and zero core charge AND it's BRAND SPANKING NEW! Not to mention, it even came with a brand new cap and rotor which is about a 15-20$ value in itself!

Install a brand new and avoid all the other possible reasons the parts not changed in the distributor will take a dump.

I worked for Cardone Industries for 15 years, I'm pretty knowledgeable about distributors. Never have anyone rebuild you one. Leave that to the manufactures.

one suggestion...

been through a very similar experience - turned out to be the MSD coil. Replaced with a stocker from Oreilly (the "better" one) and all problems solved!

note that prior to replacing coil, we replaced:

dizzy (bought a new Mallory)
TFI
plugs
wires

...only thing left was the coil. MSD went into the trash!:nice:

I got the new Richporter Distributor and car is running great now. Only issue is static in the speakers when the engine is running. It's minor so I can deal with it until I track down where that is coming from with the new distributor. I'm just glad my car is running well again.
