Custom grind... Who is the go to?

My fiance is allowing me to order my cam shaft for christmas this year. Who is my best choice for this job? What is all of the information I will need on hand to give to these guys to get the process started?


pretty sure the bottom end is stock
- windsor JR 180cc iron heads (may get ported before install, I'm talking to a guy)
- stock rockers
- Trickflow trackheat intake
- 70mm throttle body
- 87mm pro-m MAF


rwhp goal is 300+, with mild low end street manners but a meaner than stock top end.

This will be my first engine build so trying to get a good idea of the things i need.

Ed Curtis. www.flowtechinduction.com. E-mail him for his custom cam request form. Fill it out and send it back and he will let you know what your options are. Just a word of caution with Ed. He gets A LOT of tire kickers asking for quotes, so it may take him a few days to e-mail you back. I think the total time from when I first contacted him to when my cam was at my door was around 2 months. Ed will take care of you after the sale, which is great. I had some issues with my new cam and he helped me through everything until I was happy.
 
I would go off the shelf on the set up listed above, I do not believe a custom cam would be worth the expense give the mildness of that combo.

^^ I tried pretending that I did not actually read the OP's first sentence but you just summed it up. I would also not bother with a custom grind for this setup, you could call up Comp Cams and see what they recommend though, my guess is that it will be an off the shelf recommendation.
 
If you want the most out of any combo, regardless of the parts used, a custom cam is the best way to optimize power output and fuel economy. Before Jay Allen went off the deep end, the cam he ground for my car made 300+ horsepower and torque on a stock shortblock (no flycutting of pistons) with OOTB trick flow twisted wedge 170cc heads and a track heat intake. The car idled like stock and got 25 mpg on the highway as well through a 5 speed. With an off the shelf cam in that combo, I would have been looking at a choppy idle, poor gas mileage, and horsepower in the 270 range. That's leaving A LOT on the table to save $150, in my opinion.

As stated, go with Ed Curtis. With Jay out of the picture, he's the best around without a doubt.

It's part of my Christmas present, I couldn't be more excited that she is allowing me to make a phone call to get this to get my build off the ground rather than buying me some underwear... I don't need no stinking underwear I need a cam shaft!

This was my train of thought. I was originally going to go with comp cams XE270 but a local speed shop told me to save my money and buy a custom grind.

I will be sure to contact Ed Curtis to get the ball rolling.

I'm really hoping to get a coat of paint put on this car and slap the heads and cam on this thing before March 2nd. It is going to mean the world to me to have this thing looking and running like it should with my new wife leaving the ceremony that day.
 
Whats the general opinion of Bullet cams? I understand he's a big mustang guy and does a good job.

Bullet grinds the cams for most of the custom guys.

I used Dan Rawls of Cleveland Performance for my cam, Dan is a good dude, and unlike alot of the other custom cam guys, he will actually talk to you on the phone. I didnt send one e-mail to him, and when i called and left him a message, 90% of the time he called me back within a few hours. I probably spent 2 hours on the phone with him before i sent any money and the cam has been great.
 
Custom camshaft is the way to go - $325 through Ed. Your going to want a good set of springs to match, no matter which route you choose (custom or OTS).

I have had him do two combinations for me - very content with both!

There is only a select few people that could pick out a good OTS camshaft to match the intake and exhaust paraments of their particular engine set-up. You are only guessing and wondering, if you don't get a custom camshaft for an average of just $75 more over a standard OTS camshaft.

To me it is a no brainer, having experienced both sides.
 
He has a 2,000 horsepower chain saw. His daily driver is just a 3,000 horsepower blown BBC on an old wooden cart with a steering wheel nailed to it. He actually poops horsepower. Can you believe it?

This really did make me LOL.

On topic: FWIW, my cam was speced out by Mike at Total Engine Airflow. I kind of had a guess what the lobes should look like, but Mike was ultimately the one who made the decision on the exact grind. My cam lobes are straight out of the Comp master lobe catalog... And the intake lobe is actually intended to be a Chebby LS lobe.
