Hi, can someone tell me what is the maximum diameter tire I can run on my 91 GT? I have read several things online that leads me to believe 26" is the largest but I've seen some running 27" but claim they had to modify the wheel well somehow.
I have a 5.0, 5 speed, with 410 gears. I am only running 24.5" tires right now which are 225 50r16 on pony rims. It is the size the car came with when I bought it. I know the originals were 225/55r16.
When I measure the wheel well from the ground up to the fender I comes to 26" which leads me to believe that is the max and as far as I know the car has never been lowered.
I would like a wider tire in the back for more traction, but I also want a thicker sidewall just to give it that slightly more aggressive stance in the rear.
The problem is most of the tires I look at with thicker sidewall look more like truck/SUV tires.
Which is better for performance and traction, a wider tire with less sidewall height or slimmer tire with more sidewall height?
Also, if I did modify the fender well what size tire could I fit in there then?
