Hey guys, I'm looking to purchase a new Vortech V3 SCi kit (5-6psi) and need some questions answered. My car has a handful of bolt-ons, and this kit is designed for a 100% stock car. I already know I'm going to a different power tube (MAF to charger) and most likely an 80mm MAF. Should I upgrade to 42-47# injectors? Also was planning to install a 255LPH fuel pump at the same time. I've been reading people suggesting not using the FMU provided in the kit, and to have custom chip burned and tuned on the dyno? Is there any other parts I'd need? Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Sounds like you are well on your way. Get the GSS 340 (255 high pressure ) pump. Do yourself a favor and definitely get 42lb injectors and 80mm maf. This will give you plenty of future growing room and you won't have to buy more injectors later. With the larger injectors you will NOT need the FMU. Don't install it
You do need to buy a boost retard/ignition box such as a MSD 6BTM. Alot of people hate these but alot of people such as myself have had no problems and like them.
I also recommend having it tuned on a dyno with a custom burned chip as you mentioned. Even with the use of a chip you still need amplified ignition so your 6BTM will double for that as well as optional timing boost retard.
If you are running stock heads you'll need (cooler) plugs for boost. I run Autolite 23's set at .032 gap.

Good Luck

Is your car stock ? What injectors and MAF do you currently have ? Has your fuel pump been upgraded ? I just did an install on a car that was NOT stock and I had to swap several parts back to stock components in order for it all to work , but we did leave the C&L MAF and 30lbs injectors and tuned it with a Moates Quarterhorse instead of using the FMU unit. I am a vortech dealer as well.

Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions

The car runs 12.5 N/A, just looking for a safe amount of boost to push me into the 11's. I've got different heads and intake, a holly fuel pump(not sure what lph), 24# injectors, 76mm MAF with C&L air tube, and Adj fuel regulator. I know nothing about what the tuner will be capable of doing timing wise. The MSD boost controller sounds like a good idea, but I haven't heard of anyone having to use it with the low boost kit. Maybe the custom tune compensates for the timing change? I've also seen a accessory kit on the Vortech website for a 80mm MAF and 42# injectors, no brand name, any opinions on this? I just want to have the plan set in stone before I just go out and buy parts. 2002BLGT, I may shoot you an e-mail if you have time to run me through everything. Thanks guys

I have an Eddy RPM, 70mm T/B, ProM 77, TFS1 cam, GT40X heads, 255lph pump, and 30lb injectors, and UPR power pipe. With this combo, I see 7psi on the gauge with the Vortech SCi with an A/F of about 10.9. This is with the FMU and a disc for the 30lb injectors. I have not seen any ill effects of the FMU, but then again my combo is very mild. If you can avoid using the FMU by going with 42's, do it, but keep it in mind as an option if you are on a budget.

What is your car putting down on the dyno with this set-up? im also looking into the v3 SCi kit.

Wrong. Only way FMU is not needed is ONLY IF you get a tune. Larger injectors without a tune will not provide the extra fuel needed.

Actually that statement is not correct. The 42# or any large injector is supplying more fuel then a stock injector and it may be comparable to what a stock or small injector supplies with a FMU. The FMU just creates higher fuel pressure under boost to give it the fuel instead of a large injector.

Typically you do not need a FMU with a 42# injector, especially with any type of chip tune. The tune really helps a large injector since you can pull the fuel that is not needed out at idle and down low to prevent the fuel from washing out the rings.

I did my own install and used the FMU... and now I'm reading that it's not needed for 42lb injectors?

If you have a 42lb injector you should NOT need the FMU. However like I mentioned above it would be best to have it tuned so you can pull all the extra fuel the 42# inj is giving you out at idle and midrange...The factory ECU does a decent job but it has issues getting enough fuel pulled out at startup and idle.

You don't have to get a larger mass air and 42lbs for the low-boost kit. The FMU with the 255lph will supply enough fuel for the set up, but the injectors are going to limit your horsepower. Using your current kit as is, should push you into the high-mid 11s without adding to it.

As far as the btm goes keep this in mind, the one included in there H.O. kit (not the low boost) actually is , well here is a quote from an MSD tech,
"The Vortec unit is basically our PN 5462, Universal BTM which has an inductive ignition in the unit along with the Boost Timing Master.
The inductive unit has about 5-6 times less energy outpput than the 6 BTM (PN 6462) that has a CD ignition built in along with the Boost Timing Master."

The Vortech H.O. btm also has this harness
5A002-002
Wiring Harness Adapter, 1986-1995 Ford EFI for the mustang.

As for a powerpipe, Upr price is hard to beat. Remember though a bypass valve isnt included; doesn't mean you shouldn't run one. The main reason people ditch the FMU is because its basically a band-aid, which last for some but not all.
