AFR 165 pedestal rockers and valve cover options

I'm fixing a blown head gasket right now and am thinking about getting some AFR 1472 (pedestal) just to ditch some weight, maybe get better head seal, and hopefully make the same power with a little lower boost.

Right now I have GT40Ps with stock push rods and rockers. I'm using FRPP valve covers with baffles. Can I just reuse my rockers, rods, and covers? If I need to, which 1.6 rockers should I consider getting? Do I need hardened rods?

Personally Id strongly recommend a STUD mount rocker set-up, much stronger and easier to adjust...but youll need to get new rockers and possibly valve covers.

I assume your still running stock pistons, so Id look at the TFS FAC 190cc heads, $1450, othersied Id notch the pistons and use a AFR185 or 205 depending on your future intentions. Where are you located?

I'm located in Michigan. I've been running these gt40Ps for 5 years with my turbo setup. I'm not looking for any more power and will get different heads for sure if I ever decide to build a shortblock. Therefore, I consider my future plans to be irrevalent. I've put my stock rockers on many times and don't have much trouble with them, so I don't think it would be a big deal to stick with pedestal. Plus, I want to keep the cost down, which is why I'm hoping to use stock rockers and pushrods. Otherwise I'll just stick with my GT40Ps and still make block breaking power.

I use to upgrade nearly every AFR spring, the stock springs only had 120# on the seat which isnt enough with most set-ups. What are the specs on the springs on the AFR165s your looking at?

I got my AFR 165s from Keith Kraft and I am very pleased with them. Maybe give them a call and talk to them.

They took the previous castings, did CNC porting, supplied Manley valves their own custom spring good for a .60 lift but I'm sure you could get it tweaked for what you want. The price is the same as buying pre-assembled AFRs but these are superior IMO. After running these I'm so glad I saved and went with the AFRs, they are very solid performers.

I ran scorpion 1.6s on these and did ARP studs. I squeezed them under a set of stock Foxbody valve covers. They just barley fit in there with 2 gaskets and some grinding on the baffles. I plugged the oil neck and cut a hole for a new breather port for the PCV line to the intake. I can still run my intake without a big spacer this way and keep my stock hood. A coat of paint in the future and these will look pretty sweet I think.

That is good to know. Sounds like a nice setup.

I'm now thinking about keeping my GT40P or getting AFR185 which I could use down the road if I build a motor. Unless I get a really good deal on some 165s it really doesn't make sense for me to get them.

If you stay with the GT40P heads, a simple set of pedastal mount rockers will fit under the stock valve covers.

Yeah but I will definitely not be putting aftermarket rockers on my gt40Ps. I see no benefit in doing so.

I'm looking at the 190cc track heats as well since they will clear stock pistons. I think it would be a decent head that would allow me to use my current headers and also make bigger power down the road. I've been looking for someone with these heads making big power, but I'm guessing they would do just fine for 700+ rwhp with a good block and bigger turbo. I'm probably just goinig to hold off for this year and stick with my current setup a little longer, BUT I am definitely considering stepping to the next level at some point. It would be nice to do heads and fuel system this year though so I wouldn't have to spend so much money all at once when I do get a block....
