69 Mustang Tourque Converter & EFI Kit

Hello everyone. I finally purchased my dream car which is a 69 Mustang GT with a 302 V8 and a C4 automatic transmission. The previous owner put a performance cam into the car but I have no idea what kind of cam was put in it. When I come to a stop the car idles super low to the point where it sometimes will die. I took it in and the mechanic told me that it was due to the stock tourque convert not having a high enough stall. He recommended a 2300-2500 stall performance converter to handle the extra load of the performance cam. Does this sound correct and does anyone have any recommendations for a tourque converter? Also I am looking to covert the engine to Fuel Ignition so if anyone has a recommendation for a EFI kit that would be great. Thanks so much!!

Somrthing has been changed here, because the standard (minimum) engine in the 69 GT was the 351W 2V.

At any rate, the torque converter should have zero effect on the stability of the idle. I used to know a junkyard that would start up used engines, on request, lying on the floor, so you could see them run. They were capable of idling smoothly with no torque converter at all. For that matter, manual transmission cars have no torque converter, and they idle smoothly. You need a smarter mechanic.

You need to find out what cam you have, what's the vacuum at idle, etc. Until you've done that, you don't even know if the cam you have is simply too radical to idle properly.

As for EFI conversion, why? A properly set up carburetor will match or even outperform EFI.

I have to disagree. I think he means it stalls when in gear coming to a stop. This happened to my car when I swapped my cam. I installed a tci break a way converter and it took care of the excessive load at idle in gear. Your guy has the right idea.

Thats exactly what I was referring to. When I come to a stop the engine begins to idle higher right away but only for a few seconds and then idles way down to the point where the engine wants to die. I have a 69 mustang with a C4 automatic so would you be so kind to make a recomendation for the TCI converter?? Thanks so much!!

TCI's website has lots of info, including camshaft duration specs that suit each of their converters and what the expected idle rpm increase will be. Have a look, you should be able to match a C4 converter to that cam.
