Intermittent miss...

Yeah, it probably will run like poo, and throttle response will be for s***...but, if it's the MSD the problem will follow exactly as it did before. Your idle will likely suffer some, but the computer should put it in limp mode and bring up the idle a little to compensate I think.

I'm USAF...I'm actually an expediter now, I don't turn wrenches anymore. I crewed B-1s for 9 years, then went to QA for four years, came back to the line for a few months, then threw me in the office as a section chief. About 6 months ago, the shortage of folks finally hit our production section and I was yanked there. So, I try to execute the flying schedule for the production super...I push maintenance actions and coordinate different agencies to produce sorties. I'm sure my brother would like to hear your experiences about working Boeing's hot rod , and the '67; he does floor design up in Seattle on the '87.

Lancer, sweet! That is a badazz jet. And your brother works the '87. That is a beautiful aircraft. Bet it's more impressive in person.

I enjoy working the '57 and '67. Nice airplanes. I'm full CAT qualified and Power Run / Taxi on both. That '57 is dangerous on a power run... she can get away from ya real quick. Hot rod is right. :nice:

I'll try the MAF later today. At least it's something. Oh, and I won the $10 dizzy.

Got my $10 ebay stock 5.0 dizzy, man that thing was nasty. Tore it all down, cleaned, reused the old TFI / PIP but with new silicone grease, new brass contact rotor, cap and adapter...

Installed, timed, warmed up and...

the miss is gone.

I'm going to try the MSD Billet dizzy with the new cap, rotor and adapter. Remember, I replaced the TFI and PIP that came with the MSD originally. The only thing that remains from the MSD dizzy as it was bought is the billet body.

GLAD you found the problem congrats ! Must be a good feeling after all that time trying to figure it out ! I will have to do this next to my stang since I had the same exact problem as you were encountering...

Thanks Dmar. Just have 2 or 3 more small things to do and she's hittin the street. Gotta see how she does then, but I'm lookin forward to it.

I'll post back after I try swapping some more things around. I'm gonna throw something if it ends up being a cap n rotor.

Sweet deal!

The Bone (as many of the maintainers and operators call it) can be a fickle beast. Because of systems integration, complexity, lack of parts, deployments, and lack of tenured experience on the airframe, we are constantly in a battle to keep our head above water...so, while it looks cool (and I'm in complete agreement there), behind it, there was probably 300+ man hours to make it look nice or to get it to the next airshow.

Yeah, my brother is pretty stoked about the '87's recent maiden and I believe it's first delivery was either scheduled or had already taken place-big deal to him and I see why. That's awesome to be fully qual'd to run and taxi.

They won't let us do taxi checks, but we get engine run certs and yearly re-quals. Running engines on the Bone isn't as eventful as many folks think though...with a good dude upstairs, engines can be up and running in <5 minutes. When you run up in aug on the outboard engines, it kinda just rumbles the jet around and yaws a little bit in the chocks. But, I've never witnessed anyone jump chocks...seen flashlights and inlet plugs eaten, but never seen one accidentally taxi.

I seriously doubt it would just be a cap n rotor unless they were just eroded beyond reason...the factory ignition will jump a 0.060"+ gap on 90k mile spark plugs with little ado...seen it. Car still ran well...ran better when we changed the plugs though :D

Yeah, max power engine runs are fun. The '57 has to have 60,000 lbs of fuel on it just to help hold it still, or else she'll start dragging the tires. :nice: The '67 will bounce and struggle against the brakes so much that you can't read the N1 and have to use the computers so ya don't overshoot the target. We dont get to use chocks... at civil airports, we have to taxi to a different area to do runs, usually out at the end of a runway. So no ground support out there. Just you, the throttles and the parking brake. ;)

I'm gonna try it cuz that billet MSD looks so bitchin! Of course, if it doesn't work, I'll finally see about getting my money back. But I'm with you.... also doubt that just changing the cap n rotor will do it. I just don't understand why the problem is in the body of the MSD dizzy... hmmm. Ground path, shutter alignment, shaft play...

Nice!:nice:

If we have to reposition a jet, we still bring chocks with us. I guess they figure us heathen enlisted folks will run airplanes into stuff...there's probably some that would.

i cant wait for that day to come for me ! Did you take any vids ?

Naw, no vids. I was too busy trying to make sure it would stop. I guess after sitting for 5-6 years, the brakes could use some work. Also the Hammer shifter has a rigging issue, the heater core is bypassed, engine idles a bit too high (1000 with a TFS stage 1 cam), several exhaust leaks and there's horrible ignition and alternator noise in the stereo.

But the engine ran great!

Stick with it Dmar... your day will get here.
