Now that I'm getting old I want better seats for my GT, the main upgrade being leather. I'm not a fan of the stock 94-04 leather seats. Is anybody running any of the aftermarket seats? 05+ seats?

If anybody has information it would be great, and pics would be even better. I just want something that looks stock, but is more comfortable than the stock seats.

You're gonna' need seat brackets for the specific seat you want.

What seats are you thinking of buying? Ricaro, Sparco! Them seats can run up to 1000 or more without the brackets.

Went with the ebay cloth special and the seats are holding up. Found some seat brackets but had to fab up some metal bars to attach to the bracket to attach to the seat.

Thanks for the feedback. The options I'm most seriously looking into are 05+ seats, a good set of Mach 1 seats, or perhaps doing a Katzkin conversion to my current seats...actually I'd probably purchase a second set for recovering just so I have the stock ones on hand.

I've found brackets for installing 05+ seats in 94-04 cars, and any of the major aftermarket seats usually have the parts available. The aftermarket seats I've seen available are Corbeau and Recaro, but they usually don't have the OEM look.

I'm running some Corbeau TRS's in black. While they dont exactly match my dark charcoal interior. They are much more comfortable and definitely hold you in the seat much better than some worn out leather stockers. I replaced my worn stockers at 110k miles and the TRS's were a huge difference, I felt more planted and wasn't sliding around the seat.

I'd also watch for 03/04 Cobra seats as those offer huge side bolsters too. But, the only downside is they usually go for the same price as a new set of Corbeau's minus the tracks.

TMI is getting ready to come out with Mach 1 foam and upholstery so any GT seat can be turned into a Mach 1 seat (or Bullitt or Cobra seat too; they all use the same frame)

TMI used my Mach 1 seats as patterns and now I have the prototypes in my car

^man I seriously cant wait for this. I saw your thread. Its about dang time haha. Depending on the cost its probably going drive seat costs down on OEM. Which is a lose for those how have them and a win for those who want them.

The Bullitt seats were nice as well. How is the quality of TMI's leather? One reason I am shying away from the OEM leather is that in our cars it left something to be desired. Every car with leather I see has horrendous cracks from the cheap leather. The 05+ seems to be better, and GM blows Ford out of the water. My DD is an '11 GMC Sierra and the leather in it is great...so that's my benchmark at this time.

I'am 57 with a bad back also, but I gotta go with "flstang65" on this one because the seats in my 98gt are more comfy than my 06 gt and 04 mach1, and the suspension in my 98 has eibach sportlines. Seems there is more foam and a softer grade in the 98.

That's interesting about the 96-98 seats being so different. I remember the seats in my 84 and 85 GT's being more comfortable...but back then speed was the only criteria I was concerned with, so I would recall a milk crate being comfortable.

JMC - Mransr is 100% correct - we will be launching our new line for the following seats this month:
2001 Bullitt Upholstery and Foam
2003/4 Mach 1 Upholstery and Foam
2003/4 SVT Cobra Upholstery and Foam

If you have a 99-04 GT/Standard frame you will be able to purchase new Cobra foam and upholstery and install them on your stock GT Frames.
Also, we will soon be offering a GT pattern that will fit over 03/4 Cobra Foams. So a GT Sport Seat will be an option!

94-98 Seats although comfortable - are a pain! As Ford actually injected the foam INTO the upholstery, so to change them you need to replace the foam and upholstery at the same time.

As for the leather , shoot me a PM with your address and i'll get you out sample. (if you could do me a favor when you get it, and post back up here to let people know what you think of it - good or bad?)

Waylon,

I know you said there was work being done to recreate the 1999 "Limited Edition" GT leather, how is that coming? The charcoal shouldn't be a big problem, but understandably the silver inserts would need to be just right in color to match the door inserts.

Thanks,
-Jason

To be honest Jason - I haven't been able to get anyone to clip me a small section of their Silver insert so I can match it. The OE Silver is not listed in the Ford Sample books - any chance you, or someone you know could clip me a .25 inch sliver off the back side of your rear seat? From there i can match it up no problem.

And yes, the Dark Charcoal is already picked and matched up perfectly.

I've got the Corbeau TRS's. They're a little scrunched on the passenger side, the cloth fades a bit in the sun, the the material and padding have held up over 40k miles.
