Last time I had the oil changed in my 89, they told me that the size filter I had is no longer available and they put a smaller filter on. Ever since then, the check engine light comes on as soon as the car warms up. The guy still put 5 qts of oil in. I remember this happening once before when the wrong size filter was used. The car was out of commission for a couple years and was checked out thoroughly by a mechanic prior to the oil change. Everything else is ok and I've had no problems. Are the larger filters really no longer available or was the oil guy fibbing? Could the high oil pressure cause the seals to leak? Should I worry?

You can find oil filter casings in the larger size even if it's not in the same brand that you're used to using.

I don't however thing that your filter has anything to do with your check engine light.

Ive been using a Wix filter with good results but the trusty FL1A is the stocker and still available almost everywhere. that "tech" fed you a line of chit probably cause they were out of the right filter and didn't know till it was too late.

the following Fram numbers all fit and will work without issues PH8A, PH16 and PH2870 the PH8a and PH16 are the same other then the height.

I use Wix for the most part but since this motor has 160k Ill look to save any penny I can to save up for another motor anyways. actually Oreillys just had a $10 oil change special so i picked up 13 oil changes took 7 transactions on 4 different days but hey $140 for 65 quarts of oil and filters is cool with me.

Fl-1A and call it a day.

Check engine light is unrelated though. There is a low oil light, but it would be constant. If your CEL is on, it's another issue

I'm a much bigger fan of WIX for the money for about $6-7 you get a better micron filtration and a more dependable filter I wish I still had all my cutaways from about 12 different filter brands for the money WIX is the way to go Donaldson does a great job with quality control most filter are between 18-24 microns the 51515 I think is rated around 19-21.
