Just filled her up

HAhaha I just woke up and read all of this. In 24 hours, it slowly morphed from gas prices->gun right/control->politics. All so different, yet all seem to have a common denominator - the Gov.

The Government. That's where I was supposed to bring my point back to,.....I kinda got off on a tangent. ( Strange for me I know).

No we don't! Let the privet sector do it. If there is actually a demand for it, it will be built. Anytime the government gets involved in business the cost are 10 times to high and then it is run so poorly as to NEVER be profitable and becomes a huge drain on the taxpayer. Amtrack, US Postal Service ect have never run at a profit. The government is pretty good at killing people (armed forces) but even that is costing more than if it could be (which it cant) run by the privet sector. Supply and demand. Why do you think GM is stopping the production of the Volt for the next 4-8 weeks? Because nobody wants to buy those overpriced taxpayer funded vehicles and there is a glut of them on the car lots. GM sold only 8,000 Volts last year after "thinking" that they would sell 60,000! Just because there is a bus station/route or light rail, or subway built does not mean that it will be used. Look at the light rail project in Portland Or. A HUGE taxpayer boondoggle. For every rider the state has to subsidies $8 to help cover costs because the ridership after more than 10 years has never reached even 25% of projected ridership. If you build it they will come..............................ummmmmm NO!

True, good points! My only issue with that is, I think it would be impossible for a private company to go ahead and start digging tunnels and upgrading existing rail lines without huge involvement with big brother :/ Also how do you counter 50+ years of auto/oil industry controlled city planning (sprawl = extra revenue, more roads = more cars + more oil used). :) I guess we're fubbared either way you look at it. Green energy is a joke (today's standards) and we need to learn to consume less to be fiscally and environmentally responsible.

Glad to know there are people that believe our gubbernment fully  katrina was a taste of what could happen. Law abiding citizens were forcefully removed from their homes, stripped of their weapons, that were never returned.

If the demand is there and it is profitable, the construction companies would be lined up down the block to place a bid. The big problem is this: THERE IS NO DEMAND for mass transit.........period. Therefore it is not economically feasible to do so, in fact to undertake a project like this is business suicide to do so. Which is exactly why Government would want to get involved, to make it "to big to fail" Lol.

YEAH!

Also government and business have different goals. Sure it's business death to build something that won't sell. In my opinion government should be building infrastructure for its cities and people. But that's in a perfect world, in the real world government has "friends" in business, consultants, etc... A 100 million dollar project suddenly turns into 5 billion and 3 years late LOL... If I was a nutjob running for office, I'd try and decrease the amount of people on the highways. Just like you would encourage a young child to take on a better habit. It would be good for the long term. Not environmentally speaking either, I'm talking from a "let's not make these ____ head countries any richer than they should"

So in the Seattle area of more than 5 million people, why should the government spend several hundred million if not several billion dollars just to make a mass transit system for 5-10 thousand tree huggers? Why should the other 4.95 plus million other taxpayers pay for such a specialized if not "elitist" entitlement? Will it solve transportation problems in this area? Nope, not even close. In fact the environmental impact of such a project would cause more harm than could possibly be created if the same 5-10 thousand people just drove and drove and drove for years to come. It is all just a "feel good" scam. Just like the state of Washington implementing California emissions standards. It was a purely political feel good photo op that the politicians could show us stupid voters that they "care". The state of Washington never had, or has the $ to implement the "new" emissions standards. They even said so. (I know as I am Washington State emissions repair certified) It is an illusion that "they" are making our lives "better". Whatever......

Don't get me started on emissions tests... it's such a load of crock. We can agree to disagree on transit. I think transit is needed, all I see are highways getting more and more flooded with cars. I'm far from an environmental person (I drive a supercharged fox for fun), I'm looking at it from a cost and time perspective. I would rather spend 30 minutes on a train than 2 hours in traffic. :) I just wish we had high speed trains (where I live) so I could buy a home farther away from the city. I'm in Canada too so the population density is all around the border too, it would be "easier" around here to have smart transit systems in place - but our government is pretty useless - and people don't get how cool things "could" be if we had a better transit network.

Right now it's a 5 hour train ride from Toronto to my parents in Montreal, it's a 7 hour drive (roughly with moderate traffic). A train ticket is 160 bucks per person, per trip and even if I take the Mustang (which I do often in the summer) the fuel costs me about 150 bucks (round trip) and I can bring 4 people in my car. Transit sucks to say the least. It's more cost effective for me to drive a 26 year old supercharged 5.0 V8 than to take a train hahaha! The good thing about the train is, beer is cheap and when I take it (winter) - I'm usually drunk enough to survive a weekend at my parents :D

Anyway it's all relative, no big deal. We won't see real cool high tech 300mph trains around here for a long long long time.

Edit: screw this! I'm going to work on teleporting like on StarTrek... I can beam myself into some hot chicks dressing room and beam right back home in time for my wife to make supper. lol

You think transit is needed, OK, but at what cost? And who is going to pay? It is always nice to want things, but somehow someway somebody has to pay for it. And all of that money going to transit is now not going to someone Else's pet entitlement of the month. You cannot pay for everyone's 'wants". If the demand is not there, or the ridership is just not there, you can "want" all day/life long, and it just is not going to happen. Especially if such a "want" dose not solve anything other than to make you feel good. A bullet train from Toronto to Montreal is nice for you, but would you bankrupt the rest of Canada to make you happy? I want a Star Trek transporter as well, but guess what ? It is not going to happen.

You realize you're living in a sea of people who believe contrary to you in Seattle, right?

My Brother lives up in Lake Stevens...works in Renton...all I hear from him are how people up there can't drive and they all think the world is for their use. Also have a big problem with passive/aggressive personalities from the general populace.

You realize you're living in a sea of people who believe contrary to you in Seattle, right?.

I am reminded everyday. The car is evil, mass transit is gods gift to man, free healthcare for everyone, open boarders, the worlds problems are all the USA's fault, join hands, sing Kumbi ya, coexist, and all of the worlds problems will magically disappear................................but only if it does not inconvenience ME! It is enough to gag a maggot.

hes my views on the several topics in this thread:

Gas- if the govt really wants to help this country they would stop taxing it. they make more money the the oil companies do.

politicians- they are all BS and none can be trusted and I'm not sure any of them know what the constitution even is. politicians have been corrupt for over 100 years at least. also i feel being a full time politician is BS it should only be a part time gig like it was when our country was founded. I say this because of a few reasons 1) It gives them time to really think and see how the BS laws they pass suck. 2) It should slow down there stupidity. 3) Since it isnt a full time job they would be less likely to abuse the powers they have.

Guns- I own several guns and its within my constitutional rights to own such guns. I'm an Iraq vet who not only has extensive training with CQB and hand to hand combat and feel I have the training to own a gun. What I don't like is some dumb 21 year old child or a 50 year old man thats never held a gun in their life going an buying any sort of gun with out having at least basic knowledge of how a gun works that is a mistake. guns are not the problem with murders, mass casualties or drive bys its the people pulling the trigger not knowing the destructive powers they posses. about a year and a half ago my little brother was shot in the head he still struggles everyday with the effects of what has happend he bound to a wheel chair and has limited functions in his legs and arms.

Except that you still need to pay for road maintenance which is funded largely by gas taxes. This is my problem with public transport. Why should I have to pay for train track maintenance, or pay to get a train up and running when I won't use it in the first place? At least MY form of transportation is funded directly by me. I don't rely on anyone who doesn't pay gas tax to fund the road systems (generally). I also have to pay a large up front cost to purchase a vehicle to drive on said roads. Perhaps people who want the trains so badly should need to pay a 10K up front cost like we motorists have to do. Then make them pay another 10K every 5 years like we motorists have to do.

Trains are a f**king joke. They've been most successful in the NE corridor of the United States which happens to be one of the more densely populated areas in this country. That train system services about 30-50K people, but the population in that area is around 50 million. Meaning that using our example of the most successful rail system in the country, it services less than 0.1% of the population... once again, trains are a f**king joke and as was said earlier is another one of those "feel good" policies the lefties love so much.

The idea that "if you build it, they will come" simply doesn't work with trains. Amtrak was supposed to be self sufficient, and yet it still relies on government investment to keep its doors open and its trains running.

This is why I think our 2 party system is somewhat successful... when one party controls both houses and the presidency, they go on a binge passing excessive legislation that appeals to their base. OTOH, when both parties share the power, it actually prevents excessive legislation from being passed (not always true, but its a generalization).

I do not own any firearms, however I can see the need to allow us citizens to legally obtain any firearm if we jump through the necessary hoops. I certainly don't like the idea of living in a country where the federal government has the ability to prevent its citizens from defending themselves from criminals or from the government itself.

i agree with you about the trains but not the roads the roads near my house are complete crap and a rarely repair with the hundreds of billions of dollars that are made by the govt you would think they could maintain these roads. but its just the opposite a road near me (67th ave) has need to be redone for at least 8 years (since i started driving) and hasnt been its also a very busy road. and on top of that they road near my parents was redone 4 times over 3 years and didnt need more then about a 10x30 section redone.

the two party system is BS considering there is no true right there is a middle and the left no true conservatives.

I agree with you . Gun Control is hiiting what you aim at. Since I have very poor aim, I'll leave the small arms handling to the guys who have good aim....
