I was out cruising and decided to let the pony run. First to second at 6000rpms, went to shift to third and it went into first at 6000rpms. I thought I was going to lose the rear-end and wet myself.
I would think there should be something in place that would not let this happen.
Will take it in and let the dealer look at it. Any thoughts on this?

Most likely nothing happened. If it over reved, the rev limiter would have caught it. If it is running fine, I would not bother with a dealer visit.

The rev limiter is there for just that exact thing.......a mistake......driver error......or just a plain screw up.

So you went 1st to 2nd, climbed the tach and were going 2nd to 3rd but went into 1st? I didn't think that was possible?
ya the synchros should have pretty much made that impossible. you would have had to force the hell out of it to do that.

also the rev limiter simply cuts power to the engine when hit. it doesn't physically prevent the motor from reving beyond that point. in other words it is possible to have the engine exceed the rev limiter in the scenario the op is bringing up. as long as the transmission is engaged and wheels are spinning the engine will be at what ever rpm is needed for that speed in that specific gear. since it sounds like the wheels locked up that may have been the only thing that saved your engine.

The problem I think some people have is they may think they have to be 'forceful' in shifting under that scenario. With my stock shifter, I never had a problem making the 2-3 transition as, even though the stock shifter is crap, it would find it's way to third pretty much on it's own. I have shifted before where I could make this same mistake but, it was because I shifted out of my usual normal routine. Instead of just pushing the shifter, I forced it to shift. If you have a '11+ Mustang with the crap shifter, you need to just push the shifter to third and let it follow it's own path. The worst that could happen doing it that way is, you end up in fifth. By push, I mean with your fingers or palm of your hand and not a quick motion. If your too quick you WILL force it into 1st.

I now have a MGW shift assembly in mine and it is much more precise which makes it harder to make this kind of mistake no matter your 'shift method'.

No force involved!!!

Get an aftermarket, spring loaded shifter (Tri-Ax, MGW, etc).

I agree, a shifter is a big help on the MT82. If you don't have the bucks to change out the whole shifter, you can just replace the stock shifter's rear bushing. The stock rear shifter bushing is like a marshmallow (no bull). All the main shifter companies offer the bushing separately.

Was looking at a new Steeda shifter when I found a deal on a new Hurst shifter. Let me tell you the difference is night and day with the stock shifter. With the stock one I missed third quite frequently and not necessarily speed shifting. The Hurst is sweet and have not missed third since. As well I pulled the plug on that stupid shift solenoid that causes you to shift from first to fourth. Hated that being forced on me when I least expected it. I am really happy with the result of both of these tweaks. Just sayin'.
