2001 2v 4.6L Mustang to Vette to same Mustang

So I have been a member on here since 2004 it says? Geeze... I can't believe I remembered my password.

I went and parked the Mustang after constant problems with it so its been sitting for about 4 years now. I bought my Vette Dec. '06 after they wanted 30k over MSRP for the GT500 and the mustang only drives a couple blocks a week on private roads anymore since. I plan on having JBA here in San Diego do a full run down on the car because I am selling my 2007 Vette Z51 and I have the cash. A lot of new technology is out there now and I have like a month to catch up. This car needs to be able to throw comp on my C6. I already have dyno tests that claim 250hp with 358 torque before it broke and I only fix it with better parts each time. It even has a race oil pan but I forgot who made it.

My basic setup is:
-75mm BBK Throttlebody
-Patriot Stage 2 Ported heads with stage 1 cams
-I rebuilt the engine to the point of pressing the piston rings in myself (shops kept failing me)
This means forged internals stock compression, Cobra Crank, aftermarket flexplate on the tranny 2400 stall convertor per Brother's Performance harassing me about the 3200 that I blew up my tranny with still sitting in a box in my garage.. It might still be good since I only blew a tranny seal blowing the "master cylinder"? I think it was called)
-Engine is sound and from what I understood from when I rebuilt it should be good for 600hp reliably-ish
-Performance Automatic 4r70w
-JBA ceramic coated, etc. shorty headers
-Superchips custom tune from JBA
-Flowmaster catback
-C&L Mass Air Flow meter housing
-Ported the intake with it raised with an intake spacer (now they make intakes... lol)
-Steeda Underdrive pullies

Here is about what we are looking at:

Assuming a budget of $10-15k... where would you go with the project? I've always been into Kenne Bell superchargers but I havent even looked at this car in years (The Vette pulls 1.06g's and runs a high 12 1/4 but I'm going to just trash it after how many problems I've had and I can buy 3 mustang engines for the price of one for the Vette)

10-15k? The bottom end is already built? I would say ditch the Patriot heads and install some Trickflows. If you are content with 600ish to the wheels I would go with a centrifigual blower like a vortech and do the suspension and tires to make the car safe and handle all that power. You can always go the turbo route. What kind of problems did you have with the vette. I am saving up for a c5 zo6 or C6 base.

Sorry... I thought this site would e-mail me for responses X(

I will start with the Vette: I'm 27 and I have a decent job making like 40k/year. I have literally 0 bills. I bought that vette for 54k fully loaded new thinking it was Chevy's flag ship vehicle so it had to be high quality. The roof where it pulls off creaks daily. Search, it always comes back and its on every C6. My whole electrical system was shorting out. I literally had my stereo grounding out with my ABS so my brakes were giving out and locking up on their own. The GPS sent me in the wrong directions and the seats start fall apart at like 40k miles. I started my car up one day and it said it was overheating without being run for like 6+ hours. From when I bought it, they have replaced the fuel tank sensor, the whole rear end, etc. If the engine blows thats not cheap to replace nor even only exhaust costs $1500! (unless you buy flowmaster) I had the z51 suspension where my screen on the windshield said I was doing 1.06gs on all stock parts in an automatic and getting 29mpg highway. I pulled a Ferrari 360 Modena on the highway with it but I'm over it. $650 each back tires and $550 each fronts. I did my own brake pads with factory parts and it cost $500 with me doing them myself and a ghetto shop resurfacing my rotors for $30/each fronts $15/each backs. I don't like a car with no spare tire and most tire shops don't have low profile enough jacks to fit under it. 6 liters and thats more oil every change. It was a money pit. I have done the math. I can buy 5 mustang engines for the price of one for the vette, a set of tires for 1/2 of the price, $400 a month car insurance versus $45/month if I can get my mustang back on the road. I've driven both. Stang was more fun and more realistic.

I don't really want centrifugal. I want to ditch the plastic intake. I'm thinking a Steeda suspension... maybe the 5 link, Kenne Brown K-member and extreme subframes with Kenne Belle Supercharger. 03 cobra fuel tank. I might try to dump some giggle gas on top of it since it is only a hobby car and I'm picking up a daily driver at the same time I get rid of the Vette.

Sounds like you got a lemon. I'm not sure why you would buy a 52,000 car when you make way less than that in a year. Doesn't make sense.

When you start to build a reliable high hp car with a proper engine, fuel system, blower, be ready to open your wallet. It isn't cheap an the unexpected always pops up, meaning you need to throw down more money. All the issues you had with your vette are rare, and can easily be fixed by yourself if you know what you are doing.

I read this and feel you bought the wrong vette my man. I have a c5 corvette the thing has 400 hp and still drive like a new car. I have a cobra mustang the day I bought it blew an engine. The front end is falling apart. It handled like my old S10 pickup. Apples to oranges. Out of both cars the vette is a much better car. Im assumeing you may have changed out something on the electrical parts in the vette. Mabe an aftermarket radio? As far as tires and brakes the corvette is the flag ship of chevy thats why the parts are so expensive sepecialy tires they are run flats. no spare is needed. The brakes on my car are cross drilled and ceramic pads this thing can stop on a dime and tell you what side it was. these parts are stock c6 brakes I retrofitted to my c5 nothing special. The car is expensive because its the best. As far as the mustang goes. Why did you just fix the transmission I woul have a stronger transmission and read built before you do any perfromance mods to it at this point. I dont think you can build a mustang gt to 600 hp and make it reliable. May want to look at newer 5.0 cobra forged engine with a super charger. Hell buy the whole drive train from the newer car if you want it reliable. Any thing more you do to that gt engine will blow it up.

The Vette could have been a lemon? Most problems started around 40k miles though. The rear end being replaced and them removing the fuel tank, etc. was under warranty. I used it as a daily driver around town and for autocrossing. Going on a 1,000+ mile drive with it I got a flat with the run flats. 19" rims on the back and 18" rims on the front? I used GPS trying to find a tire shop and the best I found was someone willing to plug it while it was still on the car. You ruin the tire's sidewall to drive on it very long and shops will refuse to patch it if the sidewall gets messed up. I don't want plugs in my race tires. Not even Chevrolet carries the z51 tires in stock usually. Its 100% stock besides a carbon fiber intake. I inherited a bunch of money and decided to buy it. I was going to buy the Shelby GT500 but they wanted $30k over MSRP telling me it was going to be a "one of" type of car... ha... how many years they make them since 07?

I know the mustang will blow again. My transmission they claimed is a custom built for 6-800hp and has about 5k miles on it. I just want it to make it to 20-40k. I hand pressed the piston rings into my engine on the mustang's current 4.6 so I'm not afraid to get my hands a little dirty. I know jack about actually building trannies and rear ends though. I just drop it to JBA when it needs a tune. I only drive around 800 miles a month and this is only going to be my weekend/fun car after I finish breaking in the engine. (yeah, brand new engine that I took my sweet time rebuilding slowly) I have been thinking about all bases. I might build a spare engine for that day and I already have a rear end with 3.90 gears in the works. I tend to build a new one rather than rebuild. I'm one of those people that I have so many memories in this car that I'd never sell it. Probably wouldn't have ever gotten the Vette if I wouldn't have blown my oil pump :-/
