trickflow kit or engine swapout??

I am looking at modifying my engine power in my 1993 mustang gt. I was looking at getting the trickflow top end kit with the street burner intake. After I add everything up, trickflow kit, oil pan, water pump etc. it seems like for not to much more money i could get a crate drop in motor with the same horsepower? I have a friend who is a mechanic and does all my work to the car and he is the one that pointed out that his labor would be the same to do an engine swapout or a rebuild for me. What is everyones opinion? Also what engine and from where would you suggest I get it from. I am not looking for anything to crazy, just a fun weekend driver with an ocassional track run. Thinking maybe 400 hp? with the option to add a supercharger in the future. Any advice or opinions would be helpful.

Thank you

Top end kits are usually around $2k after you figure in gaskets, fluids, and other little nit picky stuff. With a good tune you could get around 325 flywheel horsepower (conservative estimate). That should be plenty of power to fit the "fun weekend driver" mold.

A crate engine would be much, much more, I'm sure everyone else here will agree.

trick flow top end kit and do your own work

there is a great write up on this forum to do a head, cam, intake swap

your car will turn into feeling scary fast if your coming from a stock 5.0

I'm in the middle of my Trick Flow top end kit H/C/I swap. It's a great kit and comes with pretty much everything you need. I reccommend you buy new set of lifters & a water pump. Plus you will need at least 24 lb injectors, adjustable fuel pressure regulator, bigger fuel pump, 65 or 70mm throttle body. I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of right now.

Your best bet is the 360 HP top end kit which will put you at about 300-310 at the wheels when complete. At that point you are still able to mount a supercharger later and add another 100-150 at the wheels pretty easily.
