1966 mustang 86 block

If using the 85 dizzi you can hook it up similar to the duraspark conversion diagrams. There are three wires, black, green,& purple. With an MSD the black isn't used & the purple and green wires connect to the magnetic pickup harness from the ignition box.

Essentially yes. The 85 dizzy is a magnetic pickup style unit. I "assume" you could switch the plates internally to use points but why bother... Even the stock Duraspark ($25 at most part stores) is better than having to occasionally adjust points. I used a duraspark box on my engine break-in/test stand with a 70's granada V8 duraspark dizzy.

ok i kind of understand sorry first build like this.
my dist has a 3 prong male and the icm has a 2 prong and 4 prong male plugs so the confusion is how to hook them up... do you hnow what would happen if i did it incorectly? would it fry them or just not start?

thank you for your help

Personally I'd buy an Duraspark for the money or an MSD 6 if you want it a little more performance oriented. Jacobs makes a nice setup but at almost twice the cost of the MSD... Summit's cd ignition box looks pretty good as well but I've no experience with it.

The duraspark any parts store will carry. Just ask for it from any V8 ford from 75 to 85. I pick them up from the junkyard all the time for about $5 our so. Haven't had a bad one yet.... When you get it make sure irt has the blue strain relief connector were the wires come out of the box, it's the"updated" version.

The 86 block I have has flat tops and the "turbo swirl" heads. Actually the head design wasn't a bad idea to promote better atomization in the cylinder, but the flat tops didn't allow for a lot of cam lift. I believe the max was around 0.450" possibly less...

going carb so from my understanding has to be 85 dist but i have no wiring harness how would i hook up the dist. to the ignition control modual?
Your basic premise is wrong. You can use any distributor you like, even a stock 66 dual advance distributor, available anywhere. Since you have a roller cam engine, you would need to put a steel drive gear on it, but that's actually pretty easy to do.
