So I decided to make a thread to document my attempt at getting a local Orlando, FL Ford Dealership to fix my whining MT-82 manual transmission in my 2011 GT. It's whined ever since I have owned it, but has begun to get worse with time.

Here is a video of the whine:

I also have had a rear end whining problem with my Mustang since I had a dealership in Wichita, KS replace the pinion bearings due to a noise on deceleration at around 45 MPH. After their repair, they test drove the vehicle where it was found to have a very loud gear whine. Note: the gears where not replaced at this time. The only real possible problem had to have come from an incorrect installation (improper pinion depth/gear pattern).

The dealership then replaced the gears under warranty. When the service advisor called me to tell me it was done, I was told to "drive the car and see what you think." So I drove the vehicle to listen for the noise on deceleration around 45 MPH, not a high speed whine. The pinion bearing noise had been fixed, so I took the vehicle home. On the way home, I noticed a rear gear whine at interstate speeds.

I brought the vehicle back a couple weeks later for a test drive with the "lead technician", where he concurred that the rear end made the high speed whining noise. The dealer then replaced the gears again. All was good for a couple weeks, until the whine came back at 50 MPH, and again at 74-78 MPH.

Here is a video of the gear whining. You can hear the whine at steady state cruising, and the whine go away when I let off the gas. It comes back as soon as I get back on the gas:

We then moved to Orlando, FL where I find myself today dealing with one of the local Ford Dealers on these problems.

First, my 2012 Fiesta needed the clutch replaced at 9900 miles due to a major rattle and chatter. We asked the service advisor if we could bring my Mustang in for them to look at and repair the car when the Fiesta was complete. We were told no appointment was needed and to just bring it in when we picked up the Fiesta and they'd take care of it.

When we arrived to pick up the Fiesta, I was told by the same service advisor that they would not be able to even look at my car until 4 days out because they were "half staffed". Let me tell you, I was upset and he and everyone else that was there knew it. Well, my wife’s cooler head prevailed and he agreed to look at the car the next day if we dropped it off.

The next day I was contacted by the Service Drive Manager about my concerns. He verified most of them, but wanted to give me my car back until this Wednesday, where they could have a more qualified technician look at it.

That leads us to now. I will be bringing my Mustang in tomorrow to see if they can figure out how to fix my concerns. I will keep everyone updated on how the service is, and what the fix might be.

I have an update:

The service adviser called me today and informed me they got in contact with the Ford Tech Hotline about the transmission noise. Ford agreed it was not normal and to proceed with tear down. Catch is it wouldn't be "done" until NEXT Friday.

I asked if they could look at the other problems I had it in there for in the mean time and they said no. Ford wanted to correct this problem first and then go from there. I'm ok with that.

I asked if Ford or the dealer would provide me a rental due to such a long period of downtime. He asked if he could ask his boss and get back with me. Five minutes later I get a call back saying I can just pick up my car and bring it back NEXT THURSDAY. WTF!

Why do I bring the car in once already for them to tell me to bring it back in 4 days... Then the next day they tell me to bring it back in another 4 days. Now they are telling me to bring it back in 7 days! Is my schedule meaningless??? I told them I'd pick it up Monday since my wife is out of town and I have no ride to get it till then.

After speaking with my wife, she made me realize all this run around we're having to do so it's convenient for them (the dealer). I then called back and asked for the "Service Drive Manager". He explained things differently.

He said the only tech he trusts is on vacation starting tomorrow and won't be back until next Thursday! So he scheduled me to bring it in yesterday, forgetting or not knowing, his only tech would be leaving for a week! The manager did offer a rental next Thursday to try and compensate and did take some responsibility.

I knew this would be a long and drawn out process but damn! Come on! It's almost time to start talking lemon law........

We are having similar whine issues for quite some time. Ford replaced the gears, but the whine continued. So they sent an engineer to the dealer to drive the car. He suggested they repace the entire rear end assembly. We still have the whine. We are also concidering filing under the lemon law. We love the car, but the whine will drive you nuts on long trips. Hopefully your issue will be resolved. Good luck!

bbb- Yes it will. I have driven the car from Florida to Kansas and back many times. And my family lives an hour drive down the interstate away, so it is always driving me nuts. This car never made a rear end whine until they touched it... that's what really drives me nuts...

Hello PoopDawg & bbb455,

It’s a pleasure to meet you both!

I’ll be happy to arrange a call from the Customer Service Manager for your area. For me to do so, please send a PM with your contact information, dealer name/state, approximate mileage, and VIN.

Take care!

Noemi

I dont have my car to beable to tell you the date, as it's still at the dealer. But I can say that I had these same problems with an 07 GT I bought new also, but it had 3.55's. Another new 07 I had came with 3.31 and never made a sound, even after I put 4.10s in it.

Small update: the dealer has had my car for a week and two days. In this time, the car sat for 6 days while no one even looked at it. Finally someone took the transmission apart and said it has a pitted output shaft bearing. So they have to order special tools and the parts and the trans should
Be done by the middle of next week. Then they will start on the rear end and other problems. My guess is I'll be without my car for about a month...

Updated via a phone call today. The dealer is still waiting on a tool they ordered last week. The vehicle has been at the dealer for two weeks as of today with nothing more then 6 hours of tech time invested. I have been more then patient with them, so I will get Ford Customer Service involved to try and expedite the process...

Good Luck hope it all works out for ya

Now 3 weeks and still no "specialty tool" or parts. I have PMed Noemi a week ago and have not heard back from her or Ford Customer Service on this issue. How far does it go before you tell them to put it back together and you take it to another dealer???

Time to rid yourself of that crappy MT-82 and get a T-56 Magnum.
I get gear whine from the 3.73s in my '03 Cobra that wasn't there with the 3.55s. Don't know why. Could be the pitch of the gears. Maybe it would even be louder with 3.90s or higher. Who knows?
Either way, good luck.

CobraCruiser- That's a brilliant idea.... If I didn't just buy a 35,000 car that has 13000 miles on it, and under warranty. Plus that 5K to invest... I'd rather get it fixed for free...

Another update though...I did get a phone call this morning from Jane at Ford customer service after filing a complaint via Fords website. I explained everything and she was apologetic. She insured that if the specialty tools didn't show up she would get them there ASAP. Well they didn't show up again today. So I got a call from the dealer and they are now replacing the whole trans.
I should have got Ford involved weeks ago...
