Started the first phase of grinding down all the welds. I'm not done welding the bay yet, but I figured I'd take down what I could for now and that would show the areas I missed so I can re-weld areas again later.

I hate hate hate grinding welds. It's probably my least favorite thing to do. It coats my garage in a layer of metal dust. It gets all over me, and the particles imbed themselves in my skin, so I have a slight metallic smell for days. Even with a respirator, I seem to get particles up my nose and in my mouth. I'd rather have soda blasting dust all over the place than this metallic crap. If I worked in this industry, I'd charge a boatload of cash to smooth someone's engine bay.

Anyways....progress.

I also cut out the last bit of rusted strut tower metal. I'll make new pieces to replace the old and weld everything back up.

Next will be grinding down the driver side later this week hopefully.

w/ all the plating and welding you've been doing,...why am I seeing through an area beneath each strut tower?

Extra air movement to cool the turbo. As the car goes faster, the wheels act like cooling fans and push air through those holes reducing engine bay temps up to 27%.

I was finishing up the last of the rust repair on the strut towers that I had actually forgot about. Had to cut out one more small section of sheet metal that was too rusted to do anything with. I'll be making some new sheet metal pieces to weld back in place to button everything up.

Know what would be cool? Ram air cooling ducts for the turbos. :chin

Lol. Thanks. We would work well together, because I could weld for hours. Grinding them down, not so much. I get sick of it before my first flap disc wears out.
Hahaha..... I hear ya .....I worked at a bodyshop for a few years when I was a kid - it was my 'calling' .....(except the welding part - which I hated) - I'd be a body-man today if I wasn't an idiot and got myself in deep deep debt for school - spent alot of $ to learn how drink every nite -

Finally finished the framerail repair. There was more involved to it than I thought, from making those tubular supports and welding everything up. But it's done, so I can move on to bigger and better things!

First I filled in the area I cut out and re-welded the spot welds where the sheet metal attaches to the strut tower.

Then I shot everything with paint and welded one more layer of sheet metal to complete everything.

Just have to grind the welds down and then everything will be seamless. Luckily, I don't have much welding left to do in the engine bay.
