A "little" Clunk Noise In The Drivetrain?

Anyone else experience this? I have a 08 GT 5 spd. I have 51k miles so I'm still under the 5/60,000 powertrain waranty. I can hear a little clunk noise when I am driving occasionally. Let me see if I can describe it. If I'm slowing down for a red light and I'm in say, 3rd gear, and I downshift to 2nd because the light turns green, when I let off the cluth and give it gas, I can hear/feel a little clunk noise in the drive train. Is this the u-joint? Is this normal or should I take it in since it's still under factory warranty?

That's what I was thinking too. Wonder if I would need to put the factory intake and air box back on before taking it in for possible warranty repair on the u-joint? I've heard they are picky about cars that have aftermarket parts on them because they think the car has been raced. I wouldn't want that to cause them to void the warranty even though the CAI has nothing to do with the u-joint. lol!

This sounds like ring and pinion to me... and yes, take it in.

These cars make lots of noise. My 05 GT has been making that drivetrain clunking noise since I bought it in 2004. Dealer checked it, and said it's normal. I suspect your dealer will tell you the same.

I would not accept this from a dealership who's probably too lazy to determine the actual cause.

Hey mikes2008gt,

If you’re hearing a clunk, make sure the bowling bowl is out of your trunk!;)

Definitely visit the local Ford dealer; they’ll have that sound repaired in no time flat.

Keep me posted on the results, and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Take care!

Noemi

The Ford service dept just called and said the clunking noise in the drivetrain is "completely normal", and said they could take me for a ride in a 2012 GT and it would make the same noise. They said they all do it. Sounds odd to me...

the cars with manual make a bit more noise. the clutches have torsional springs to ease driving and comfort, sometimes these springs get weak and clatter or depending on driving habits (how you balance your pedals when taking off or down shifting) a new clutch could also make the same type of noise

Ya my 06 which I just got made that noise and I was Like " 9000 miles and a bad universal already?..Whatever the Ford dealer said about "normal" is BS, and to me a lazy answer and they don"t have a clue. Some body has to have an answer . Don't make me go out there and figure it out ..cause I will. WTF

Any manual I've had does it a little, and I've never had a problem. If you get under your car and turn the driveshaft back and forth it'll have some play in it. That's where you get a little bit of a clunk from deceleration to acceleration. Mine has 28,000 miles and does it.

To the OP: If you have a litte clunk now, wait until you put in an aluminum D.S. and afternarket adjustable UCA! I don't recall my stock set up, with 5 speed manual, having usual noises through the drivetrain, but when I installed the items mentioned above, it was definite "clunk" time, lol.
