Crooked Stripes

I was so excited to get my 1970 Mach 1 back after over two years at Mustang Madness Motorsports, in [now] Portland, Connecticut. The deal I have with MMMS is to completely refurbish the body in entirety, and load a fresh custom coat of paint including a supersnake stripes. Unfortunately, after getting the car home and inspecting the car, I noticed (as well as everyone else who looked at the car) that the stripes are really crooked...front and back.

I asked the owner, Dave Rowland, to come and see what I see, to show home the crooked stripes. He declined. Then I commented on how the car would have to be completely repainted because I wouldn't accept a quick fix...I wanted the entire job done right (even after $15k in price!) He stated that he wouldn't repaint the car...only fix the stripes. My concern is blending the custom color. Besides...it's just wrong to cut corners.

Am I being unreasonable to expect a perfect job? I paid quite A lot of money, and waited over two years...

What options do I have to recoup what I've lost? Anyone else experience this situation? I'm so bummed...

i once painted the stripes on my 65 shelby replica crooked, i placed the tape on the wrong side of my mark, good thing it was to the narrow side all i had to do was wet sand retape and re paint ,but i dont see how that coud be done on a supersnake stripe
it will always be crooked, the whole top of the car would have to be repainted. if it is a custome mix color that may be hard to match, at the price you paid, the painter should do it right no excuses

...Horse...I agree...I think that Mustang Madness Motorsports should make good and repaint the car. I appreciate your thoughts...now to wait and see if more people agree. So few Classic Mustangs left...they need to be respected as such.

can you post a couple of pics? let every one see . all these shops have to do is step back and look at there tape lines they should be able to see crooked lines, but i see a lot of crooked stripes, at least mine was just the hood i put the tape on the right at the rear and on the left side of my mark on the front but i didnt charge my selfe $15k to paint it

And, politely remind him that as you show the car at the local events, you will be asked, and answer lots of questiosn abou the paint.....Wow, who f*cked that up? MMMS...Guy wouldn't fix it...15K for that...

Woody...you seemed to capture the essence...I want to show the car. T people would just laugh. It truly is f*d up...

A certified letter from an attorney would probably light the fuse under the guy's ass to get it fixed. Any competent body shop should be able to fix it without a total repaint, so I'd take the guy at that offer first, with the condition that if it is not satisfactory, a total repaint will be necessary.

exactly what i was thinking. $15k paint job better be perfect. if he still refuses, then that amount of money is worth the hassle + paying court costs.... you may have to get quotes / have other body shops look at it for proof in court verifying that the work of said body shop is faulty.

Bike....just to clarify...body and paint was 15k. Still the body wasn't rusty and wasted...just needed some work. I think you're right. I had anther body expert look at the body and paint. He said the stripes were way off. He said 7k would fix it. I already contacted mt attorney .

Okay Folks ~ Here are a few pictures showing the crooked stripes. The color is Valencia Orange with Tuxedo Black stripes. Note that the back stripe 1" yelow right hand stripe on the deck is canted about 5 degrees, but also the entire stripe is canted! Look at the front stripes....they aren't straight with the hood at all. Mustang Madness states that the radiator grill panel would be covered by the trim...so it doesn't matter if it's crooked.I was planning on not installing the trim there. (Personally....I belive that regardless of covered or not the stripe should be striaght...) Still really bummed...now I have to follow through on legal action, when I thought they had integrity!

Wow, I don't even know what to say about that. They might be able to wetsand through the stripes and respray them, but that is pretty obvious, even on my phone on tapatalk. Do they not own a tape measure? I know some things can be eyeballed, but we're not talking about flames where they're random. We're talking about needing perfect symmetry here, and they couldn't be bothered to take a couple measurements for reference? Your lawyer will have a slam dunk case here. I just hope they don't make you drag it out forever.

Sure looks obvious to me!:( And I'm NOT a body/paint guy. Seems like its time for you and/or a good attorney to provide this A_$HOLE a new orifice right next to his existing anus!:eek:Or maybe rip his head off and crap into the resulting hole in his neck! Figuratively, of course! Seems like you have a good case, as long as he is a LEGITIMATE, licensed business and you didn't jack him around or string him along on payment, although, even if you were a "slow pay" there is absolutely no excuse for the final results. Personally, I would try to sue him for the funding to have someone with a little pride in their product fix his F--KUP. He's already screwed you once and I'd bet dollars to donuts that if he is forced to fix that, it WON"T be his finest work. If I could avoid it, I wouldn't let him near my car again. Ask again and I'll tell you how I really feel!;)
Just My $.02,

if they assembled the car, they must have seen that. but that is VERY noticeable too.Its rare to hear of a good experience with a paint/body shop. My luck has been no better :(

Bad advertisement will really hurt them, but they can also try to sue you too.

thats terrible, looks like they guessed at the tape lines. the color not being metalic would be fairly easy to blend, however ,you did not pay for a repair job. there will probably always be some thing that wont be right with a repair it needs to be done right from the start. if a shop wont stand behind there work they dont need to be in buisiness . i to would want a total repaint no ifs ands or butt heads

It sounds like he has agreed to fix it (which is some admission there is a problem). You are unsure he will fix it correctly/satisfactorily. He will argue in court that he shouldn't pay for others to repair his work, as he could have done it, given the chance. At some point, you may have to let him try. But, it better come out perfect. In a reasonable time. I just had my car painted and the gun made some "splatter" on the roof that showed the gun pass lines. I took it back and they re-sanded the entire roof and painted again. Because there is no natural line for separation on a 66 coupe, they had to do the quarters also. My job was considerably less expensive than yours. Another local shop painted a friends 34 Ford 3 times as the vertical surfaces flashed a different color than the horizontal ones. Problems happen. I think you need to let them try to fix it. But at the price you paid, you have the right to demand it comes out right.

I've been doing this stuff for a living for almost 20 years and those stripes are the worst ive seen as far as not being straight. It has sometimes taken me 4 or 5 hours to lay out stripes just to make sure they are perfect. It looks to me that someone got in a hurry. Ive gone as far as to redo a job for a customer because I didnt like the way it turned out even though the customer said it was perfect. I like my name to be on my work. I thinks its major BS if your guy doesnt redo it.
