Just wondering what my options are with the 1998 GT 17" stock (split spoke) rim.

I have 245/45/17's Uniroyal Tigerpaw GTZ (live in NE, need the all seasons)

Time for new tires, wanted to go a little wider on the rears. I've seen some people talk about 275/40's working.

I was thinking 265?

FYUI, a 275 is a lot wider than a 245. It's 10.8 inches vs. 9.6 inches. IOW, over an inch difference. And a 245 is pretty much the widest you can fit on an 8" wheel. You might be able to find a shop to mount a 275 on an 8" wheel, but that's just dumb.

You really want at least a 9" wheel for 275's. There is always someone who's done it wrong. That doesn't mean it's safe or smart.

It is not nearly what you're making it out to be..

I disagree. Looking at the picture, it is pretty much what I am making it out to be. You have a tire almost three inches wider than your wheel. If you cannot imagine it being an issue, why did you stop at 275's? Why not 315's?

Is there a point where you think there might be a potential safety issue?

Well of course. But a 275 on an 8" rim is not to that point..

My question is where you would draw the line?

I look at your picture and see a tire clearly too wide for the wheel. We all know you don't. What nobody knows is what you think IS too wide.

I don't use my car for drag racing. I could see being comfortable with your combo if that's all I did with my car. I have a feeling our difference of opinion stems from the way we use our cars. I like my car when it sticks to the road around a corner with the gas matted. If that's not something you enjoy then I can see being fine with an iffy wheel-tire combo.

I guess I'd draw the line at 275s. I'll admit they're on the verge, but I think they look great and I know they handle fine.

I ran 255/40/17 on all four of my stock rims (until I replaced them with stock size again). They were Firestone Firehawks on clearance.

The only problem I had was when the wheel was turned all the way, there was some rubbing.

That's totally reasonable. You know more than I do about your car.

IMHO, the OP is better off with a high quality 245 summer tire than a 275 all-season. A 275 is going to be complete crap when there is any white stuff on the ground - even 245's are too wide for a 3200-3400 lb. Mustang on snow and ice. And the traction benefit of a 245 summer tire is going to eclipse what he'd get from a 275 all-season. A full set of summer tires would transform his Mustang into a real machine.

APATS77---back to what you were askin. Honestly if your looking for an all season tire go with the continental extreme contact dws(dry, wet, snow). You can go with a wider but the price jumps and the tire choices tend to get more performance oriented tire rather then an all season. I think the DWS would be perfect for you. Well sell them all the time and actually sometimes hard to get(pending location) because they are a well sought after tire/

Ive seen 295/45/17 Mickey thompson radials on 17x8 rims, i have a 275/60 on a 15x8, whats the difference its still a 275 on a 8 inch rim.....?

To op 275/40/17 would look great on stock wheels i used to run them on my starfish wheels they looked great
