Alright Ill try to keep it short, but I just recently bought my wife a 2012 Mustang COA edition which comes with a V6 and in this case a 6 speed standard transmission. Problem is my wife has never learned to drive stick, and while she did alright with the 5 speed, the 6 speed seems to be giving her problems. That and we live near San Diego CA so the population is as dense as it could possibly get... not a good situation to learn in, and I really cant keep taking time off to drive her somewhere. Basically what I am trying to accomplish is swapping out the manual for an auto, however keeping the manual components for use in case of any warranty related instances. I am mechanically inclined and am also in the military so I have a facility with plenty of tools and lifts at my disposal and plan to do everything on my own. So far what I've gathered from previous experience is that I am going to need an auto tranny, auto driveshaft or at least segment that connects to the tranny, auto ECU, wire harness, auto shifter assembly, auto pedal assembly, and possibly gauge assembly if it doesnt match the manual one (ive seen this in previous projects). Ive already contacted several salvage yards that say they have the particular transmission I need in stock, I just need all of your help to fill in the missing small (or big if ive left anything out) pieces to complete this swap. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank all of you.

Oh, and yes, I attempted to use the search function. It yielded one result, however the individual who started it wasn't very serious about the operation, and the answers provided weren't too helpful either.

Also... I understand that I could trade this in and get an auto, or I could sell it and all that trash. I am dedicated to this, if i cannot accomplish this task then she will learn to drive a 6 speed, I'm not too worried about the money but am not looking to buy expensive aftermarket race spec parts either. Generously put, I can do without the "trade it in", "sell it", or "that's a waste of money" comments. I appreciate the concern, but like I stated, I am dedicated. Plus I love this kind of stuff.

Have you thought about selling it or trading it in? That seems like a waste of money...

if you are just in love with doing this kind of work, go for it. otherwise, not trying to burst your bubble or anything but you will completely kill the value of the car. as for your warranty, consider it shot, even if you keep everything. once you turn the bolts to swap, they can't be unturned and a dealer will definitely notice. if it were me, i'd leave it alone and teach her to drive it. if she can drive a 5 speed, it's not that much different, just one more gear. a mustang is basically the easiest car in the world to learn "stick" on anyway, so she should be good after a few tries. good luck!

this. Take a weekend off that you were going to do the swap and take her out until she gets it down.

Sounds odd.....if she can drive a 5 speed, then she can drive a 6 speed....the 6 speed is a bit different but it is nothing major and every manual 6 speed owner out there had to relearn a bit to make it smooth.

As stated....you will have no warranty on major parts plus there would be major work involved to return it to stock for warranty work.

Buy the identical car in an auto....or a better wife in an updated model......

Get out your wallet!! On the 2012 to change from a manual to an auto you will need at least the following.

1. New auto computer, programed by Ford for the pats system.
2. New engine and trans wiring harnesses.
3. Transmission cross member for the auto.
4. The trans itself (not cheap).
5. Torque converter, flex plate, auto bellhousing bolts, their different then the manual.
6. The complete stock auto shifter.

This is just a preliminary list, there will be lots of small things you will run into also.
If this doesn't scare you about the cost then go ahead but I would either sell the car and buy one with an auto, or do a better job of teaching her to drive the manual.

Seriously I understand where you are coming from as far as wanting to convert your car as opposed to trading it in. In a way I'm in the same boat. I have a 2010. I have a list of mods I'm planning for the next year or so as extra cash becomes available. But the truth is I'm wasting my money. Short of getting NOS it will cost me thousands of dollars to just to get my car close to the H.P. I'd be starting with if I had a 2011-13. The smart move would be to take that money and trade my car in for a newer one. But I love my car and probably won't .
