Crooked Stripes

Well Folks...here's the latest in the crooked stripe saga. Although Mustang Madness Motorsports initially stated he'd "...repaint the car...", he's reneged and went back to saying he meant only paint the stripes and blend in the surrunding orange. I guess I need to find a lawyer. It's too bad, because now I'll have to wait until next year to get to drive the car!

I would think that repairing the questionable areas would be a proper repair. If the roof and other main body locations look correct I would not mess with them, you may end up with other issues down the road with adhesion or die back etc...It kinda looks like they painted the car while apart?

I dont want to diss anybody, but this is why I took the time to learn it and do it on my own. Even if my car is less than perfect it will be mine, mistakes and all (Not that I tolerate any).

I would never pay for a "Ship in a bottle" someone else to built, whats the point in having that sit on your mantle? I could understand if you are doing exotic paint like a "Real flame" or something, but a single color with stripes, I just dont know.

Take your car back and let the man do his thing. THE WHOLE CAR DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPAINTED!!!!!

Playing the Devil's Advocate.... I would imagine this shop originally told you how they would paint your car, and told you Their price! Now they're trying to change the deal, because They Screwed up! Why should you receive the job done any different then what was originally agreed upon? I would allow them one chance to perform as originally contracted, Then if necessary, take it somewhere else so that you can have it done to your satisfaction!

I'd be skeptical about repainting only the stripes. I had my '68 painted in 2006, and by about 2008 you could clearly see where he had originally painted stripes and then repainted over them. There is a faint line that looks raised that runs parallel with the existing stripe but slightly wider.

If your painter doesn't sand everything flat, it will take a couple of years for the paint to shrink down enough to see this issue. It'll look perfect for the first year at least....so beware!

Im just going by what I know from painting and doing bodywork everyday for years and years and there is no reason at all to repaint the entire car just to fix those stripes

Duly Noted.... However, you can call me "Old Fashioned", but if I enter into an agreement, where the person providing the service fails to perform his obligations to me.... and then allowing him a chance to correct his mistakes, which have become an inconvenience to me........ Then I believe the only person who has the option of "Changing" the original deal, would be me! I understand that the poor, poor, painter will lose his arse on this job, but that's part of being in Business, (....Hopefully he win's more, then he loses.....)

Option "B"....... Have the car well documented... Take it somewhere else to have the Job performed in the fashion that was originally agreed upon..... And Sue the previous Shop for the Total Cost's involved to get it right!

Either way, the real Victim here is Glenn Ford, and the time he has lost over a Botched Job!

Couldn't agree more, Glenn. I think you have a powerful position in that you can demand he fix it the way you want it fixed or you go to every car show with a big sign advertising his work! Very hard to believe a business owner wouldn't see the enormous damage to his reputation when people see the results. I'd be scared to death of that if I were in his shoes.

There is always 2 sides to a story .....why would the whole car need to be painted ? The roof, and hood look fine , fenders and doors have no stripes, looks like you could redue the trunk, rear tail light panel and the front valances ......

It says in his post 15k for body and paint .....most cars need considerable metal work...floors, rear quarters , door skins, and muct more unless they are a southern rust free car , most new england cars are rusty. It also looks by the pics that the radiator support, and engine compartment are painted to match the outside...seems pretty inexpensive to me . Regardless of price paid why would you repaint the body shell, fenders, doors , ext for the areas that he has a problem on, the ft valances , and trunk lid come off in minutes , that leaves the taillight panel , a very simple fix to repaint those items, totally not nessesary to repaint everything else ....just seems like common sense to me.

How about Option "C" Let the guy fix the car and who cares how he does it as long as it looks right in the end.

Exactly !! There is no way he could take the car to another shop to get it fixed and then bill the original painter without at least giving him a chance to fix it. It's up to the "expert" to figure out how to do it, as long as the customer gets the final product he paid for.

That the original painter will fix the stripes is the best option. The whole car does not need re-painted, just the stripes.
And then remind him, that you are going to show the car, and tell everybody that they really came through! Good thing they are taking the area's that need fixed, back to metal, and then painting again, to avoid tape marks and ghost stripes...

Definitely a Biased Opinion, and spoken like a true Painter! Maybe I was misunderstood , But I said , "first, give the original Painter the chance to make it right!" I just stipulated that it should be done the way the Original job was AGREED upon, and that if the deal was to change, it should be up to Glenn Ford to decide..... and If the painter didn't want to FULFILL his contractual obligations, then Glenn should take it somewhere else, and then let the Courts decide! I agree that a Good painter could probably fix the stripes by only Re-painting the affected areas, However a Good Painter would have never let this kind of Job leave his shop in the first place..... Would You?
