Its been sitting for a few years in my brothers back yard and talk came around of him parting it out selling parts. I started to help him sell everything but then something came to mind. How much would he sell everything in one shot for? He said a number, I agreed, now I own this hunk of junk. Ive always been a import guy and although I know how to work on these things for the most part, kind of know my way around and not having any other projects going on this season, I figured why not convert over to the dark side. So here I am finally a Mustang owner. Not sure what to expect out of it performance wise. Just trying to get this car running and drive it/weed out issues that a 25 year old car would have and sitting in a back yard rotting away for 3 years.
Reason for him selling: He couldnt get pulse at injectors and couldnt get spark. 2 things I am not worried about diagnosing. He lost all focus and drive and gave up. Here is how I got the car:
3 years ago he had the motor rebuilt by a local machine shop. Stock 302 bored .030 over to 306, stock crank, eagle rods, JE pistons 9.6:1 compression on 60cc heads, F303 cam, edelbrock 60379 heads, ARP hardware, all professionally balanced & assembled. Motor sat for a long time but I primed it, turned crank by hand, all seems fine.... I hope. Wont know until I fire it up.
So I went ahead and started changing things about the setup I didnt agree with or like. Also it was missing a bunch of parts I had to order so above pics is all I had to really work with. So I ripped into it a little, cleaned it up and started buying parts. Here is the progress:
Kind of stuck waiting on parts. Lower intake manifold is being ported by tmoss and other than that, im just waiting on UPS to deliver radiator, steering wheel, etc. Mostly everything is here waiting on assembly as soon as I get that lower back then I can spend the day finishing it up.
I really dont know what to expect from this thing. Ive spent a decent amount of money the right way I think. Still have a couple bucks more to spend but mostly its all here. Personally if the car doesnt make near the 300whp mark or run low 12s, Im all set with mustangs because for the same amount of money ive spent already, im knocking on the door of a high 11sec import. But here I go...
So what I have added to this motor was a SN95 alternator, 1.7 roller rockers, gt40 upper and lower intake manifold (ported), 70mm TB, 3/8" egr delete spacer, C&L intake, MAF conversion, walbro 255 fuel pump, SCT chip custom to ignore egr, evap, etc. MSD distributor, MSD TFI coil, MSD 6AL-2 box w/ 2 step, 2.5" off road hpipe with new O2 sensors, new IAT and ECT sensor, 3 row full aluminum radiator w/ electric fans/shroud, hoses, belt, blah blah blah. All the small stuff to make it run.
Got into checking the fuel pump and install a Walbro 255 and I found a couple issues. The feed and return lines coming off the sender were melted from im guessing resting against the tail pipe. 1 clip was missing on the pressure side, fuel filter looks to be OEM original. Replaced filter, now trying to find used lines. I got the fuel pump out and found the gas to be a very odd color brown/black then found 3 fuel pump socks/strainers floating around in the tank. Real nice. Put in new fuel pump setup with new strainer
Last seasons car to this seasons car... The Irony!!! (note vanity plate)
Had some time to get radiator in, install wiring harness, and paint the valve covers. I dont have much time to really work on this much with my schedule but I found a couple hours today to make more progress. Still waiting on the lower manifold to come back from porting then I can really put a dent in this assembly. Here are a few pics
