Getting A Fox As A First Car

Well I had a few questions.

Am i making a bad decision getting a fox? I don't plan to speed, race, etc, or abuse her at all. I know the MPG is quite bad, but I won't be going very many places so I say I'd waste about a gallon a week? Lol I don't know, I just don't expect to be going more than 10 miles a day(and thats on a very long day going hella places) haha.

If I do get a fox, should I look for a stick or a auto? I would prefer auto because I hear about people having problems with stick more than an auto.

If I can't find an auto, is it hard to convert, and pricey?

Any other things I should know?

By the way I'm 15, getting driving lessons in August, then doing my license test January, then getting my fox february!

Also, if I do (Which I most likely will %90 likely) get one, what are some mods to put on it, to make it sound like a monster I know what flowmaster exhaust is... .but thats it. I don't know much about cars yet but I plan to learn! So basically, what are "Head cams" I believe thats what there called, and whats the difference between an H Pipe and an X pipe and Straight pipes, aside from the shapes? lol.

I woukd say that if you are truly serious about a fox. Look for a low mileage 92 or 93 that hasn't been modified. If you just want a 5.0 a,95 would be a much better starting point for a first car

I really love foxes, anything after 93 and before 87 I really don't like (aside from the 60's mustangs
I don't think I'd find any low mileage foxes in my area, most i've seen on craigslist, auctions etc are140k+. I live in the bay area btw.

Okay you caught me lol, maybe once or twice, but nothing too extreme or anything. I just really like foxes, the style and the power, but I can control myself

If you don't know anything about cars or car maintenance i would say a fox isn't the best first car. But a beater Honda with a fox on the side sounds like a great alternative.

Well I have lots of family, including my dad who work on cars, so I'm sure they could help me out with any maintenance and teach me how. but thats not a bad idea, basically a honda to get around and a fox to learn about? Hmm I'll consider that!

To be honest if you don't know about vehical maintenance at 15 and wanting a car you don't need a car or need to gain some knowledge before buying and that just my opinion.

to answer your questions a "head cam" its a cam shaft depending on the vehicle it can have between 1 and 4 cams. to make it simple a 5.0 mustang will likely have 1 cam shaft its function is to lift the valves from there seat inside the cylinder head and allow air to either enter or exit the engine/ cylinder head.

H and X pipes are just that they will provide different sounds along with different hp and trq numbers.

straight pipes are basically not catalytic converters and no mufflers (typically sound like crap to be honest).

when shopping for a fox take your time and thoroughly inspect the vehicle you never know some of the hack jobs people do on these cars.

have you even driven a stick? if not I would say get an auto.

Well I'm starting Junior year this year, and I'm going to take auto to learn more. I'm getting my license in January and once I get my car, I can finally stop relying on people almost daily to take me to work.

I heard something about an X or H pipe that prevent it from getting smogged? I couldnt tell, because he didnt speak english very well, but is that true it will cause a problem, if so, is there a fix to that, or just get the ty sounding straight pipes lol.

And no worries when I'm shopping. I've seen a lot of good ones for around $3000-$4500 (which is my budget in Feb.) but I will have my dad come with me and check everything out prior to buying.

I haven't really driven at all, but I know how to operate a stick, my dad had me change gears while he was driving to teach me, when I was like 13 haha. Thats all I really know, I think i'll go with an auto though, if I cant find an auto, is the conversion hard or expensive?

Next week I'll be doing my driving lessons hopefully, then I'll start practicing in my dads Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Then by January, do my driving test and probably pass since this driving school is really good, plus its required if you're under 17 I believe to have 6 hours with an instructor to learn to drive prior to driving with my mom or dad, and when my mom gets her tax refund February, we'll go looking!

depends on your local laws about the h/x pipe if it doesnt have cats and your state requires and inspection it will fail for no cats if your state is smog only then like here in AZ youll need cats typically to pass a smog test.

No way people have more problems with a stick than an Auto. Maybe if you are drag racing and powershifting the hell out of it all the time, but for a street car 5-speed all the way. Plus it's actually fun to drive.

Any young man worth his salt should be able to drive a stick shift. A nice lower mile 5.0 would be a great first car. Any car can break down. This one will make you want to fix it. My first car was a fox when I turned 16. Sold it at 21 and regret it every day. Find one and keep it. Learn all you can about it, and have fun.

Unless you have a pretty decent job and are somewhat mechanically inclined, I wouldn't recommend a Fox. These cars are getting to be 20 years old now and will need stuff replaced. Can turn into money pits really quickly.
