Going To Surprise My Nephew,64 1/2 Mustang Coupe

the floor finaly made it in. started by bolting a export brace and monty carlo bar in place, the export brace fit with no modifications at all. i used an origional that i keep on hand ,never seen a 64-66 line up that easily.took the floor out in pieces ,this thing had spot welds the sise of dimes. i dont like to use an air chisel but that was the only way it was comming out .i can usualy do a floor in one day but it took all day just remove the old floor. tomarrow i guess i will have to fire up leroi again and sand blast the surounding areas ,then grind the bits of flashing left over from the spot welds and epoxy up inside the frame rails and all the edges. have a couple toe board patches then the floor can go in. the rear under seat area looked like it was badly rusted but it is just surface rust so i wont need any patches there i hope

blasted it out this morning,it cleaned up real nice .the back seat area does not need any patches. epoxy primed the inside just were thing are going to overlap.
butt welded the toe board patches in dont like to over lap patch panels ,its just another place to hold water and rust out. primerd the toe boards again after grinding. going to wait to put the floor in till tomarrow Nick will probably want to see how it goes in.
should be able to finnish the inside easily tomarrow then it will go up on the rotisserie

got the floor in . nick came out this morning .i did all the welding nick helped set things up. made a tool to clamp the floor to the floor supports so it would be tight when welded worked prety good. seat boxes went in nice and easy ,just have to grind the welds. nick took out the rear end and leafs ,one leaf mounting bolt is stuck .going to have cut the spring off . once he got the rearend out i had him bolt up the rotisserie
still have a little welding to do under the car that will be easy now that it is on the rotisserie. next step will be scraping the under coat and tar ,then the quarter patches.
he had his first shop class friday his shop teacher likes mustangs. turns out one of the boys in his class just got a 64 1/2 mustang to,some one to talk mustangs with

passenger side quarter patch is finnished .had to patch a 2 inch strip along the trunk drop off as well ,butt welded every thing .a light grind on the inside of the quarter and you will never know it was done. while i was at it i rolled the wheel lip. started by scrapping the under coat off first. then i cut the wheel tub loose from the quarter.
the tub usualy has a 1/4 inch guap between it and the quarter so it wont roll flat if you dont cut it.rolled the lip flat with a curved face hammer ,then i tack welded the lip to the wheel tub. nothing for the tire to grab now. it rolled with no dents .i will finnish off the lip to the tub with some seam sealer before painting .going to try to do the drivers side tomarrow. i figure if i can get one thing done a day i will have it finnished by his birthday in december

I love the tool that pulls the floor down, simple and quite brilliant really, I will file that idea away.

Thanks for sharing and thanks for demonstrating the right way to fix these cars.

after tring to hold the floor in place and not working and standing on it and tring to weld it and not working it seemed like the logical way to do it. i am going to extend a set of the long vise grip clamp with steel flat bar to reach over the rockers to help pinch down the floor to fire wall and back seat area right now i screw the floor down in a few locations and weld then remove the screws and weld those holes in but its kinda of double work that way. the clamp i made pulls the floor tight to the floor supports ,actualy worked very well and only took a few minuets to make. glad you liked it

I hear ya about the screws, I just kneeled on the spots and shot screws in between the punched holes to pull it tight. I used a bunch of them, but those vise grip pliers start to twist a lot when you use the long ones and not work so well.

Yep. Lucky kid. When I was 16, I somehow became convinced that my dad was going to buy me a red '65 coupe that a pharmacist in town had for sale. I was mowing the yard one day when my mom let slip that he had gone to town to buy a car for me. Anticipation. When he drove up in a brown 1974 VW 412 fastback...possible second only to the Pontiac Aztek in the ugly car derby... Well, let's just say it took all that I had to conceal my disappointment. 1.8L first-year fuel injection that only worked by random chance and a 2-speed auto. If you revved it up and slammed it in gear in a gravel parking lot, you could get about a half a revolution of wheelspin. The girls at the church scavenger hunt refused to come near the thing.

Oh well. I guess it built character, 'cause I got a job and bought & built a '65 fastback for myself.

hahahaha, i realy feel for you but it could have been worse,a buddys first vehicle was a vespa:rlaugh:he never lived it down. my first was a 66 mustang coupe 6 cylinder my grand father bought it for me ,didnt run was the pretiest shade of grey ,black and red primer you ever saw mixed with the origional white .interior looked like rats threw a party .my dad helped me get it converted to a v 8 and running. the worse part was all my buddys had 67-68 camaros ,it looked like a gm parking lot. and on top of that my best friend told me i was going to look stupid driving that. now all the old gang come to me looking for mustang parts, sweet revenge

did the driver quarter patch ,had to do the lower corner of the wheel tub and a 2 inch strip on the trunk drop off. but welded every thing again, then rolled the wheel lip
there was a slight crease on the wheel lip other than that it rolled nicely. one more thing off the list
