Questions To Those Who Have Ordered From A Dealer

I've been working with a local dealer on a bare bones 13' GT and they "quoted" me a $29,969.00 "OTD" price.

He tells me that this is not a set in concrete price. It's a "now" price. It could change for various reasons once it arrives.

First new car purchase....is this common practice? Or is he full of :poo: so he can milk me for all I'm worth?

There is currently a $1500 rebate on 13' GT's, but it ends Oct 1st. So, this ordered Mustang would arrive WELL beyond that date so now, that $29,969 GT is +1500 (in my opinion, way too much for a bare bones 13' GT)

He's ordering it and telling me that the price will be whatever it is when it arrives. I don't like this one bit, but what sucks.....the nearest black bare bones 13 GT is in Southern California and I'm in Seattle.

Can't a dealer guarantee a price on an ordered car?

I'd walk, I wouldn't waste time with that kind of game.

Lock the price in now; if anything it should be the price now plus any additional rebates at the time of delivery. In other words, it should stay the same at worst or go down.

BS walks...

I'd definitely walk out. My daughter just bought a car and she lives in the Bremerton area. The dealers there tried to put the screws to her too and I told her to walk out. I found her a car at another dealer 40 minutes away and did the deal over the phone. All she had to do was come in and sign the papers. If you are young trying to buy a car they seem to want to stick it to you up in that area.

OP:

Doesn't seem like the most scrupulous way for them to do business, but it's their prerogative.

Try another dealer. FWIW, I was pretty impressed with Dave Hubbard at Bruce Titus in Port Orchard. Give him a call.

I'm currently waiting on an order to come in. I have the price agreed upon with the dealer and it will not go up for any reason. The dealership will take the hit on any increase, whether it be rebate or whatever. If the price decreases, they'll honor it. I'm pretty sure this is SOP for dealerships. Like the others, I'd walk.

I'd shop around a little, you may find a better equiped car on the ground this time of year for less.
This.

If your looking at a car, and it is going to be bone stock a preorder is a waste. Best option would be to shop a couple dealerships close, heck even and internet sales manager will work deals over the phone. Don't be in a rush, and def. don't order a bone stock car. Buy one off the lot, then they don't know if it's what you want or if you're settling.

I don't necessarily agree that a pre-order is a waste, but I do agree with being patient, shopping around, and buying a car with zero options being a bad idea (going to really hurt resale big time).

All vehicles sitting on a dealers lot are costing them interest, so if you take that fact into account ordering a car would give you a better opportunity to get a good price on a current model year vehicle. The only way around this would be to find a new unsold 2012 Mustang sitting on a dealers lot somewhere. When previous model year cars are sitting around with a newer model out, dealers get desperate to get rid of them then.

To the original poster, yes what you posted is common practice. They can and will do it until you actually sign an agreement to purchase a car for a price that's mutually agreed upon. Then and only then the price will be fixed. For the record, a 2013 Mustang GT with zero options & manual trans has a window sticker 0f $31095. Check out Ford's website if you want to see for yourself. You can get an internet price on there that's better then that, but visiting more than one dealer will get you the best results.

I don't see why a dealer would do that, knowing that all they have is a $500 refundable deposit. He can walk away from the car whenever he wants and now they're stuck with an extra car that has an option package that isn't very popular (hence the need to order it to begin with).

Well, I did just that....I walked.

To comment on some of the comments here....about me ordering a bare bones. I have to because that's what I want. I don't want a loaded GT. Can I afford it? Yes, but I've never been into bells & whistles. Most of those add-ons can be had for, down the road, for less than what FORD is charging it's customers.

As for resale value being piss poor on a bone stock GT. Resale value isn't a concern for me at all. I plan on keeping this car WELL beyond it's last car payment.

As for mods.....the only things I'm going to do to her are new louvers, borla/roush exhaust, tinted windows, new rims and leather but not for a couple years.

Anyways.......I talked to another dealer (the main compititor from the one I walked away from). They are saying $28.5. This does NOT include any rebates that may be going on at the time of arrival and any discounts this dealership may have at the time.

I'm thinking there will be a rebate and at least $1500. The sales guy expects it to be a bit more because they are entering into thier last quarter which is when you see the large rebates. He thinking $2000-2500.

If for some reason when the car arrives there are no rebates....I can walk.

I'm going in this Friday to sign!

You're signing paperwork before the car arrives? All I did was hand them $500. Paperwork is signed only after I inspect the car after it gets to the dealership. Also, I guess my dealership was awesome as they even guaranteed the rebates should they decrease. Currently at $1500 + $500 student discount

I'm signing to agree on the price. If there are no rebates at the time of delivery, I can walk AND get my depsoit back.

I'm also getting lifetime oil changes (free) there!! Not a big deal, but it's something! :)

Normally I don't pay attention to troll posts, but yours has me at least curious....how exactly am I being a "sucker" here? Enlighten me, please.
Obviously as you stated from your first post this is your first new vehicle you purchased, and trust me the dealer the dealer knows that because you're too eager. Little bit of advice, go get you $500 bucks you shelled out back and I'd be filling to bet you will see the price drop. Your dealership seems shady, or you just are not clarifying everything. My local dealer tried to do the same BS to me, that is being done to you (as it sounds from what you typed). Instead of doing there dog and pony show, I searched all dealers within a 300mile radius and needless to say I was on a greyhound to pick mine up. But as you stated money isn't a problem for you so feel free and give the dealership what they want, oh yeah and don't forget to fall for the biggest newbee gimmick of them all and put a nice lump sum down so when you leave they can alter the paperwork and pocket some extra $$$. That's my .02 on the subject take it how you want.....Oh yeah and btw, long as you can stomach the anal pounding the dealer is giving you that's all that matters it shouldn't what others think....Your anis is going to look like the grand canyon :D

Oh yeah and I'm obviously a troll on this forum :rlaugh:

How are they being "shady"? Is $28.5k (minus what ever rebate is going on at the time of arrival) a bad price for a bare bones GT? It's the best deal I've gotten and I've contacted multiple FORD dealers in the ara. Also, the nearest bare bones with the color combo I want is in California. I'm in Seattle. The deposit is 100% refundable and I'm in no way obligated to buy the car.

I'm new to the forums and new to the new car buying experience. Is it your job to help out or offer advice? Nope, but why post a smart ass comment? I came to this site looking for help/advice. I'm not trying to start anything here. I'm here asking for advice and to listen to Mustang owners who have more experience with the cars and the new car shopping in's and outs. I'm not here to stroke your ego nor does anyone offering nothing but quick little smirks, smiles or slams really help me out.

If all you want to do is point out my mistakes in a way that makes you feel better about your self, then please do me a favor and not say anything at all.

I really think it's funny when someone anonymous on a forum says to another person about how they are over paying and they know someone who got a fabulous deal on their new car. I call BS, most of the time, because we all embellish over the internet. Mustangs in Seattle are in pretty decent demand. Yes, you can dicker a little, but not much here. Yea! for you if you're in a better Mustang market.
