Mines had hear whine since I owned it. You can hear it in 3rd and 4th. Pulled it down a few weekends ago and changed all the bearings and added new fluid. The end result....sounds as bad as it ever did. I think the gears just set into a pattern over time that you really can't do anything about. The only thing that's going to clear up the whine for me at this point is a whole new gearset/cluster. No thanks...I'll buy a new trans before that.

It's not like this is an age-related thing, since this came about the night I was at the track. Transmission was quiet beforehand.

I dunno, I'll save judgement until I have a chance to yank it out of the car. If it's bad, I may just rebuild it with Z-spec parts and stick it back in. If it's not terrible, I'll just deal with the whine.

I'm no tranmission expert by any means, but I do deal with gearboxes pretty regularly, and I can tell you some of the things that cause whine are improper location, ie CL of shaft to shaft improperly located giving you poor contact, or excessive lash. Don't the T5s have a bad rep for the aluminum bearing fits opening up or distorting, causing shaft deflection? I know I've read somewhere that there is too long a distance between bearings in them which leads to shaft deflection in 3rd causing gear breakage. I don't know, but I do know I've broken a lot of them, and hopefully the TKO I replaced mine with hangs in there.

I actually had been wondering that myself. Won't know until I tear it apart I guess.

So that's the early world class T5, right? I think they were rated around 265lbs/ft of torque or something to that effect. So yeah...could be on borrowed time with that kind of driving?

Haha nah, I broke the original T5 in this car almost 10 years ago. This one was put together by Astro Performance, maybe 30K miles ago. It’s got the “strongest” gearset Ford ever put in the production T5s- I want to say it was the same alloy they put in the 93 Cobra, maybe…? It’s not the Z-spec stuff, but just the last revision of the T5 before they stopped putting T5s in Mustangs. At the time I think APW was calling it their “Cobra upgrade” gearset, but I don’t think they call it that anymore.

Nicky cracked 12s, and I don't care
Nicky cracked 12s, and I don't care
Nicky cracked 12s, and I don't care
His master's gone away...

Thank you... Thank you very much. :hail:

Just a little daily... It's a 2008 GT with 21k miles on it, factory HIDs, Bullitt grille, Barton shifter, BBK CAI, SLP Loudmouths, Ground Control Coilovers, Steeda double adj. panhard rod, GT500 Brembos, TruCarbon side skirts, 2011 GT500 Performance Pack 19"/20" Wheels, and a few more things in the works. It gets me from point A to point B alright, I guess. :p

Pics below are before the grille and side skirts...
