Drivetrain Shifting issue

Hey all, I am the proud owner of a used 2011 5.0 ! 32,000 miles.....The only complaint/issue I have is when shifting from 2nd to 3rd (sometimes, usually when I am getting on it) there is a grinding sound. It doesn't last long but it sounds terrible. Any suggestions here?

I've never owned an automatic car in almost 30 years. That said, a drop in temperature will make my 2011 get a little crunchy on the 1-2 shift....until things warm up quite a bit. In the summer month, no crunchy. If you live in a cold environment (right now), it's prolly temp-related. Shift slower and don't force anything. If it happens all the time, then you should take it to the dealer and cross your fingers.

I don't understand the crossed fingers part. It car has 5 yr 60k powertrain coverage. S if there is an issue with the trans would they not just fix it?
I'm not sure. I've read stories (internet!) where people have had parts replaced in the trans, or the entire trans replaced...with little or zero improvement. If I had a problem like this fellow, I would take it to them and make sure it's done right. And hope.

I just picked up my 2013 5.0 6 speed and have similar issues. It isn't so much a noise or grinding but it doesn't like a quick 2-3 shift. As far as clunkiness or notchiness when its cold I definitely notice that and I am in 30-40F temperatures currently. From my understanding a lot of the problems have to do with the stock shifter assembly not the transmission. I had an MGW on my previous Mustang and plan to run one on the new Mustang as well. If you do similar searches you will find this is a common issue and most people just put in an MGW and forget about it. While there could be worse shortcomings its a shame that I can't drive my car the way I know it can be driven because of a finicky shifter. If you aren't convinced find the SVT Performance review of the MGW shifter vs. the stock one in the MT-82. There is a 3 or 4 part video that will more then convince you of the shortcomings of your shifter and the benefits of the MGW.

Short throws can exacerbate or create grinding if there's anything marginal in the synchros in the trans; if you're interested in avoiding that, long term.

You can do pretty well with a solid ball shift knob and a good shifter bracket, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results from those two cheap mods, I think.

I have a 13 gt and have installed the mgw. Fantastic shifter, no missed shifts. The stock shifter has a rubber bushing support that is like a sponge...worthless for spirited driving....mgw is the best.

If you're considering upgrading your shifter, seriously look into the bushing swap. You can see pictures and read about how horrible the factory bushing is but until you see it, you won't believe how bad it is! I wish I had tried a new bushing before installing my MGW just for comparison! Read posts from those that upgraded the bushing, it may be all you need. Yes, the MGW is awesome!
You may also want to research motor mounts. Apparently if the factory mounts are weak it allow excess movement which could move the tranny and make shifts a little difficult. I say apparently b/c I read it on the internet :)

The biggest impact on shifting is replacing the garbage gear oil they put in these trannys. Drain it and add this :
