I purchased a 1967 Mustang this past summer. It has the inline 6 in it.

The starter was out of the vehicle when I purchased. Today I wanted it to put it back in and see if it would turn the engine over (i was able to turn the engine over by hand).

But I noticed a ground cable on the firewall that looks like it gets bolted onto the starter - is that right? I mean there is only one bolt on the starter - for power from the solenoid. But I wasn't sure if that ground cable was placed between the starter and where it gets bolted to the housing.

Trace the wire to it's origin. If it goes the the Solenoid (sp?) then the other end goes to the threaded stud on the starter. If it goes to the negative terminal of the battery, then it gets grounded to the engine block.

Iagree with horse...cable is an engine/chassis ground....bolts to anything on engine. was probably bolted on mounting hole of starter which is why its disconnected. the dipstick tube should be attached also. doesnt matter where...attach it wherever it aligns up with a bolt...be it the starter or transmission. just to be crystal clear.....these wires/tube bracket doesn't go sandwiched between starter and transmission...they go on the head of bolt like a washer.
