when adjusting trunk lid does the tension rod needs to be in pleace?

yes, because it puts a load on the lid when it is closed. if there is any play in the hinges the lid will lift a little when you close it. the gasket and bump stops should be in place as well. especialy if you have a fiberglass lid.
