For what I am getting, I am really not surprised......that much. The quote for parts and machine work/labor was $16,259.19..........plus add $1,259.96 for sales tax for a grand total of $17,519.15 Obviously this is not your "stock block" rebuild. This will start with a Dart Iron Eagle block and end with AFR 220 heads. In the middle is a custom solid roller camshaft, Jesel shaft mount rocker arms and Jesel belt drive with a whole plethora of other neat parts. The goal of course is about 1,200 reliable HP out of a 358cid 8.2" deck small block spinning 8K rpm and living on about 23 psi of intercooled boost.
The reason for the 358 cid is the class I am going to run in has a 100 lb weight penalty for going over 360 cubes with a small block. Also there is a limit on the size of the cowl hood or hood scoop that you can run, and as a result, a 351W based block is out of the question because it makes the Kenne Bell blower sit up to high to fit under the limited cowl hood. Otherwise, I would build a 408 to 427 cid based Windsor and make the 100 lb weight penalty an afterthought.

Well part of the reason for the cost, is I want to "overbuild" so to speak. This way I only have to build the engine once. I would rather not use marginal parts to save money and then watch it go BOOM. And with a goal of 1200 HP, things can go BOOM rather easily with the wrong stuff. Believe me, if this was a street car, this kind of bank would not even be in the conversation.

sounds about right... haha
and honestly looking back at what your doing and knowing what all those parts cost and knowing what it costs to build the motor in the race car. thats actually a pretty good price!

sounds like a real power mill!! glad to see someone in this economy has some cash lol if you dont mind saying what engine builder is your estimate by

Question: What Kenne Bell blower are you expecting make 1200HP with?

The reason I ask is because I run a KB, I'm out of air, and I'm nowhere NEAR 1200 HP.
i would think it would have to be one of the new 3.6LC's we spun the living :leghump: out of the old 2.2 and only made 660 on a mustang dyno.

If that's the case, I'd be interested in seeing that setup. I saw something a while ago where someone was adapting one of the newer/larger units. That should be cool as hell.

I am going to run the 2.8L liquid cooled version. It is more than capable of producing enough air to support that kind of power. They are rated for around 28 psi. My engine will have 9.0:1 compression so making power with boost will be a little easier. My friend Walter 93 Covert, uses the same supercharger. The reason for the 2.8L is anything larger does not fit the confines of a pushrod based 5.0 so well.

I am using Somers Automotive Machine out of Vancouver,Wa. He does mostly race engines, and most of them are circle track stuff. When I had my own performance shop back in the day, I used Somers exclusively, and he always did top notch work and he stood behind his work as well. In 7 years of doing business with him, he only made 2 mistakes on a build, and he warrantied parts and labor and machine work. Does not get any better than that. For a machine shop, he does only engine work, the furthest he gets away from an engine is he will machine a flywheel. Need a axle bearing pressed on.......nope, take it somewhere else. He is one of these guys that WILL NOT take a short cut, you want to half ass a build, he won't do it.

The old saying "gotta pay to play" ive said that a few to many times in my life, boat motor upgrades, custom snowmobile, the stang. Sounds like a crazy build. You will probably have the king of the mustangs with that motor! Best of luck with it.

after building my first big engine about 1k miles in the front (snout) of the crank shaft literally snapped off and fugged everything up that wasn't major but was about a 4K hit. Im over that stage, im happy with stock or semi stock stuff that doesn't break ... as often
