I noticed that American Muscle has stopped selling the 8.8 28 Spline Ford Racing Traction Lock Differential. I am planning on upgrading my 2000 Mustang GT Automatic to a Traction Lock and 3:73 Gears. Is there any reason to incur the additional expense and upgrade to 31 Spline Unit. The car is a Daily Driver, not raced, has 120K Miles.

As trinity stated you already have a trac lock. I had similar if not higher miles on my 00' GT when I made the change to 4.10's and retained the original diff unit. Still worked great till I traded it in at 150k.

No launch and no race the 28 spline should do you just fine :)

With an auto and less than 450rwhp, I would stick with 28 spline. If you were making 300+ and drag racing with a stick, it'd be a good idea. Drag radials and manual transmissions shock load the drivetrain pretty hard and the axles are the weak point. Plus, you may be required to get rid of those c-clips in some classes.

No plans on racing. Took supercharger off a couple years ago. Thought it was an open differential since only the wheel I was moving would turn. Good to know it already has traction lock. Bad not to have experience to do it myself.
