Considering new Mustang...Need advice

Just out of curiosity cause I've never special ordered one, do you have to pay the MSRP or can you play with those numbers as well at the dealership?

Hey guys, good news my window sticker was available online today. I can't wait to drive this thing down the road. My friends are trying to convince me to buy a subaru WRX instead because they are AWD. I test drove one the other day and it was not all that impressive, and the interior had nothing on the mustang. Nice to see it online. I'm surprised you chose a V6. And as for the Subaru, that is not even a comparison. Subaru? Really? Where do you find these "friends"? Cars that I always steer clear of =Jaguar, Subaru, Saab. You made the right choice.

She made it sound like there was very little wiggle room, I imagine they'll just increase my trade value rather than come down much on MSRP. However I was told by another dealer that they have more room to play with the numbers on a special order rather than a car off of the lot.

It was kind of an awkward process, she wouldn't really discuss numbers with me, she just told me they would order and "make it work" Typically I wouldn't have settled for that answer, but they didn't make me put a deposit down on it, and I didn't sign anything obligating me to the car, which I also found interesting.

This was the first time I have ordered one, so it was a learning experience for me as well. Hopefully when it comes in, in about 3 weeks everything will work out as it should. Are you considering ordering one?

Well thank you, I think I made the right choice as well. The main reason I chose the V6 was because I mostly bought it for mileage. I was really impressed with the performance from it, and I could step down to theV6, get all the options I want and still be out the door at under $30k.

I have a 71 Plymouth Duster, so thats my hot rod. When I'm feeling the need for raw V8 power thats what I'll drive, although sadly, my V6 mustang will probably beat it.

I'm really hoping I don't regret getting a 5.0 ... nothing beats the exhaust note on one....thats for sure!

Almost identical to my son's vert--he didn't get the stripes (bought the car off a lot, and it wasn't ordered with them). BEAUTIFUL CAR. You're going to LOVE it. Tell your friends that never in the history of the automobile has someone almost broken their neck swiveling to see a WRX go by. In a GB Mustang, it will happen at almost every stoplight. You made the right call. Can a WRX beat it? Probably. Who freaking cares? Your car looks good standing still.

You should be able to do better than MSRP. The problem is, you're going to be trying to negotiate with a mouth full of drool.

You're going to have to decide if MSRP is a good deal for you, and then not worry about it; or be ready to walk away from the car when it's on the lot if they try to stick it to you on your trade. Any chance you can sell it outright? You'll tend to make more that way.

Thanks husky for the positive words. I'll post some pics as soon as the beast comes in, I didn't want to order it, I hate waiting on things. You know I'd almost be willing to bet a V6 mustang would beat a stock WRX, probably not an STi though. But you're completely right about people staring. I test drove a black one, and I was only on the road for 5 minutes and guys were staring and waving. I felt like royalty....lol.

I assume your son loves his. Does he have any issues with it? is his a manual? Does he get good mileage?

I do have a couple guys interested in buying my truck outright, but the only down side is if I trade I only have to pay taxes on the difference of the trade, and if I buy it outright I'll have to pay taxes on all of it. I have a 2006 F150 with only 70K miles, they told me I'd be in the ball park of $14000 for trade in, I know at least until april 1st there is a $1000 rebate on the mustang, and I do get X plan for what its worth.

Can I talk them down from X plan? I'm gonna try to hide my excitement and talk them down a little bit. I've never bought a new car, so I'm not really sure where to start in the negotiation process. My truck is pretty good looking, so I don't think they'll have any problem selling it.

First: My son LOVES his car. He upgraded from an 06 V6 coupe, which he really liked, and was a GREAT car, but the new one is in a totally different class. Better handling, better acceleration, smoother, quieter, and his has quite a few more options than his old car (including the soft top). No issues other than cheek pain from perpetual grinning.

You didn't mention X plan before. No, you can't negotiate off X Plan, but you typically can't negotiate a better straight deal either, even if you're a really good negotiator in a good position. You ARE still eligible for all the rebates and other incentives on top of X Plan though, so you should be buying this thing at a killer deal.

With respect to your trade-in: Figure out what your tax differential will be between trade versus outright purchase. Let's say it's $1000 more in taxes if you do an outright purchase instead of a trade. Then figure out how much your reasonably able to expect to make off an outright sale of your truck. Give yourself a little extra for the convenience of not having to sell it yourself, and possibly being stuck with either a) no vehicle, or b) two vehicles, for a short period of time if you can't perfectly time the sale of your truck with the delivery of your new car. If they don't offer you at least that net amount in trade, then you're better off selling. That way you know going into it what your real trade value is.
