From what I heard the turbo GTs weren't intercooled whereas the SVOs were(correct me if I'm wrong). But neither were much better than the 5.0 GTs if at all.
Yes, the SVO's were intercooled, but more than that they were the result of a rare planetary alignment where the driving enthusiasts within Ford engineering and development won their internal battles and got to take a car to market with unique bits like pedals better placed for heel & toe, 5-lug wheels with 4-wheel discs, a nicer steering wheel, nicer seats, and better geometry. The result was a car that was remarkably balanced for its time, from a real driver's standpoint, could turn fantastic road course lap times right out of the box, but then Ford put the fuelie 5.0 in a less-capable chassis, ate the SVO's lunch as far as cost and acceleration were concerned, and the general motoring public yawned at the SVO and fawned over the 5.0. The hot-shoe engineers who succeeded in selling the "refinement" program only to see it get curb-stomped by the "cheap and raw" program probably never got over it.
