G Force 5 Speed

Good point ,where can you get a new tko trani - clutch and bell for 2300.00,

also I rebuild my own motors with no problems, and I just had a 1100f honda motorcycle motor and trans completly apart and rebuilt it and it runs and shifts fine, I think I stand a chance with a t-5 rebuild, and it WILL shift good

If you reread my post it's $2300+clutch and bell housing.

But it sounds like you feel more than comfortable rebuilding a transmission, so by all means do so.

The Bob Hanlon t-5 rebuild video is also a big help

so we might be at 2800.00 or something to put the tko in

Ya, look for deals. Back when i got mine it was second hand but new and never used. TKO600, 700hp clutch, shifter, bell, yoke and a an adjustable quadrant and cable in a kit from Promotion. All for 2 grand from a guy that ran out of money to put his car together.

As for building the trans, me personally, i'm a risk/reward type of guy. Rebuilding a stock t5 with a $200 rebuild kit is pretty low risk for me, if i were to mess it up, i'd be out a trans that probably doesn't work right and $200. Installing an entire trans rebuild kit for that costs $1500 is a difference story, when you can buy that trans built for $700 more.

A "regular" TKO 600 is probably the best trans for the 2-2.5k price range. I agree with 2000xp8 on all the above posts. My previous comments were for what I think is the "best" 5spd trans available. And OP if you're worried about getting money back out of your investment...good luck! These cars are money pits.

i disagree, i think the richmond five speed is the best. it fits the mustang trans tunnel better, and is a stronger trans, and if you are really worried about not having an overdrive, you can select your gear ratios when you buy the trans;

here are a number of them with different first gear ratios;

http://www.summitracing.com/search/...tch&SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=transmissions

and before you complain about no overdrive, ponder this, most of us are traction limited to begin with, and we are running fairly light weight cars, thus we really dont need an overall first gear ratio of 12-14:1, first gear ratio x final drive ratio. we need something more like 9.75-10.5:1. a 2.80 final drive with a 3.33 first gear does quite nicely thank you. and dont forget that most overdrives are somewhat delicate and cant handle power shifting, and since the richmond is direct drive in top gear, it can handle a power shift. and you are never going to use the top speed capability of your overdrive trans, nor the richmond either, so that doesnt matter, and at 65-80mph fuel economy will be about the same.

Different strokes and all that... Richmond is a badass trans and I agree about the gear ratios. The Liberty TKO is about 2800$ and then you add all the extras. The Richmond is more fwiw. I know a GM guy rolling with a Richmond and it is a great trans no arguing with that. I've seen a few Liberty guys at the track with faceplated setups and they are badass also(I know different argument). Anyway they are both probably overkill for the op

You'll get mixed reviews you'll get guys that will say that the g force still breaks third gear no matter what you do to the gears it's the case that flex under high load and torques the case itself and shears third gear what all and what not but no I have not owned one but did a fair amount of research on both the g5 and a5
I am one of those guys... Broke 3rd in mine with stock case.. Maybe the GForce case would stop that... I don't know. The gears are definitely beefier though.

actually the richmond ranges from about $2400-4300 depending on which one you choose. in the end however, i do agree that it is overkill for the OPs application.

A richmond is overkill but a tko is not?

Honestly, when it comes to street trans, IMO there is no overkill. You name it, i've seen it broken, and as of yesterday that includes a liberty tko600 (third gear, not mine).

Richmond doesn't exactly have a following. It's an old school car trans and generally people don't like them.
With tko available for $2300, i can't see any reason to buy a richmond rated at the same torque for $1000 more and put it in a fox.
There is a cheaper model for $2400, but it's only rated at 450ftlbs.
I'm just not seeing the value in it.

actually i was agreeing that both transmissions are overkill in a street application. as for you breaking transmissions, perhaps your driving style needs changing?
Me? Mine isn't broken. Someone i know broke their 600.

Any 500hp car is going to need better tires.
Better tires and 500hp means broken transmissions.

An upgraded trans is far from being overkill.
I broke my t5 within a couple weeks of doing a HCI swap. Had to drive home with only 4th gear.
Imagine what 485rwhp does.

The OP has 450rwhp, honestly if he's going to drive what he's built a better trans is a necessity, not an option.

I don't see how anyone could enjoy their car without being hard on the trans.

really? since i started driving in 1975, i have only broken two transmissions, one because i was an idiot and misadjusted the TV rod on a plymouth, and one because second gear seized up on the output shaft and shattered the teeth, but then it was the old 2.77 three speed trans which is known for doing that. and i am not easy in my cars, i just dont break parts.

Not sure if you have a car with a t5 or not, but after about 350rwhp, a t5 might as well be made of glass. At that point, a heavy foot and sticky tires ends their career.
I think it's only rated at 300ft lbs. My second t5 was a Z spec, that's the one i really destroyed. The first one just grinded.

I've driven pretty much the same my entire life. I'd categorize that is aggressive, only minor trans issues without the hci, but afterwards the damage was catastrophic.
I also only use drag radials for tires.
Without even slamming gears you can break 3rd.
