Priming The Oil Pump

As I am priming the oil pump and if I don't have anyone to turn over the motor while I prime, would it suffice if I stopped priming, turned the crank some, prime again, turn the crank over, ect? Not sure if i will have someone but if what I described won't be good enough I will find someone.

I never had an issue with priming the pump with a drill until the oil comes out the pushrods and oil pressure is at normal levels, but I do know others prime, rotate, prime, rotate.. I think either way is fine. Make sure you rotate it clockwise..lol

cool cool. Yeah one of my boys said he just takes out the fuel pump fuse and spin the engine over a bit

I'm going to be doing this down the line with my rebuilt engine. Is there a special end/bit that you use to go down into the distributor hole? From what I understand it takes quite a bit of torque to pump oil through the engine.
 
Remove the spark plugs. Floor the gas pedal as you Crank. This keeps the injectors from pulsing. Do it in short bursts do you don't burn up your starter. You Should see your oil pressure come up.

a long 1/4 inch socket on an extension will fit right in there. Tape them all together so nothing comes apart. Attach it to a decent drill and spin it counter clockwise.

i think im just going to pull the fuel pump fuse and bump over a few times, letting it fill the oil filter in the process.
i have an oil pressure gauge so looking at that as I crank over will be helpful as well

not really, when my friend an i primed the engine in his camaro, we just used a regular 3/8 drill. we also just ran the drill until we got oil to the top of the engine, and had at least 20psi on the gauge.

Okay, I was just going off of what someone had told me. They may have been just referring to pumping oil through .002 (clearance between main journal and bearing) when its really cold outside. Nothing quite like starting a carbureted engine when its 20 below outside :oops:

yep, that is a recipe for a spun bearing.
