I Need Some Help With My Electric Fan

My electric fan used to work before I deleted my a/c, and now it won't kick on. It has it's own temp sensor. It works when supplied power, but it's supposed to kick On when the car hits 180 degrees. There are 4 wires to the fan. 2 red, one green, and one black. The green goes straight to ground on the body. One red goes to the starter solenoid. Black goes to the a/c power wire, and the other red goes into the firewall.

It should always have power because the fan used to run when hot, even after I shut the car off. The firewall wire i think goes to a fuse under the dash. But why? If the coil is always hot, and the fan is grounded with green, what's the second red wire for? I think the black wire supplies power to run the fan anytime the a/c is on, which I don't need.

I don't think it has a controller... Unless it's built into the fan. There are no extra parts between the wires and the things I listed. At the top of the fan, where the wires connect, there is a knob to adjust the temperature at which it kicks on.

I know it's not the best photo, but it's the only one I have right now until I get home. This shows the wires and the knob.

Fan has it's own controller then. I've seen that before, but can't think of the type of my head.
I also want to say it may be wired incorrectly. Is there a temp switch anywhere that you can see? Did rotating the knob adjust the temp the fan came on?

One red wire probably powers the fan motor. This is the wire that connects to the starter solenoid. You should have a fuse on this wire as well.

As for the other 3 wires, they are typical fan controller wires. Red would get power from a wire that is switched on with the ignition, black is ground, and green typically connects to the A/C clutch circuit as an alternate means of turning the fan on.

Now, I *think* swapping the black and green wire will get you what you need. The green wire can be taped up (or you can wire it to a manual override switch by installing a toggle and grounding the other end) and the black wire can be grounded. The red wire will get power when the car is on and you can use the knob to set the temp assuming there is a temp sensor wired directly into the controller and on the fan itself.

I'd trace out the red wire that goes into the firewall and see where it goes. if it just taps into the fusebox, the original owner must have tapped into a wire that sees constant power. I'd then disconnect that wire and tap into the low coolant sensor wire at the front drivers side of the car. This only sees power with the key on, so when you shut the power off, the fan turns off too.

That's my take based on the info you provided

Well it's a little backwards, the green is grounded and the black is spliced into the ac wire, and the red wire from the solenoid does have a fuse. The red Wire in the firewall goes to a fuse, I assume key on power. The knob up top controls the temp at which the fan kicks on. The only thing that changed is now the ac plug is not connected to anything.

well since you deleted the a/c, and disconnected the black wire, i believe you have your answer. the black wire is the key here, it needs to be hooked up somewhere because it is a trigger wire. follow your wiring, and hook everything up as if oyu were wiring the fan for the first time.

Not that it probably will help much but the way my kit was wired up was that black was ground and green went to my sensor .. Is your sensor in the radiator fins or screwed into the motor somewhere?
